St. Tammany Parish Health and Human Services, Community Action Agency Offers Hand Up

According to weather experts, the temperatures will continue to stay in the high eighties and low to mid-nineties for the foreseeable future. It is crucial to find a place to get inside and cool off during the hottest times of the day. The elderly and young children are especially susceptible to the effects of heat including, dehydration, heatstroke, heat edema, heat rash, heat syncope and heat exhaustion.

For residents living in poverty, finding a respite from the heat may not be easy. Many fall behind on their utility and rent or mortgage bills, and are unable to insulate their homes against the elements.

The St. Tammany Parish DHHS, Community Action Agency can often offer a hand up to these citizens in need. They can assist families who have experienced a hardship and are unable to pay their utility, rent, and/or mortgage bills. The household must meet income poverty guidelines, have not been helped with an emergency in the past 12 months, and show proof of hardship. These services are for St. Tammany Parish residents exclusively.

Appointments are recommended. There are two offices. For the Slidell office call 985-646-2090, and in Covington, call 985-893-3923.

Penny Power

What’s a Penny Party you ask?  It’s a backyard event which includes carnival style games, prizes, face painting, a dime store, raffle items, a bake sale, food, drinks, and other kid-friendly activities.  It’s the creation of Gayle Calamari whose vision in 2001 was to devise a way of raising money for a needy local family while having a little fun for kids at the same time.  This year’s recipient is Slidell resident Lexie Miller.  Lexie is a 16-month old child who has a stage four brain tumor.  The event took place in Calamari’s backyard on Friday, May 31st.

What made this year different was the addition of the Krewe of Dionysus.  “Lexie’s story truly touched our hearts.  Most of our members are fathers or grandfathers so everyone wanted to get involved and assist the family during this trying time.” stated Leo Schmitt, President of the all-male carnival Krewe.  During the 12 years Calamari has sponsored this event the highest contribution total neared $2,500.  With the additional support received from the Krewe of Dionysus, this year’s event doubled the all-time high by exceeding $5,000 with additional donations continuing to be received.

“Years ago each game cost a penny but inflation led to increases to a nickel and now a dime.  Win or lose, you get a prize for every game played.  We strive for three goals…to provide a helping hand to the recipient, for the kids to have a blast, and to teach kids to give back to the community.”…stated an excited, yet humble Calamari.  Local middle and high school students assisted the effort including many from Our Lady of Lourdes, Pope John Paul, and Salmen.

Donations can still be made by contacting Gayle Calamari @ (985) 641-0416.

Radio Rick Birthday

We're not sure of the exact age, according to his payroll paperwork Rick is 26, but I'm thinking it might be a little north of that. Either way, a nice party was held in Rick's honor and we want to share a few pics with you...

Going after bully parents

If you’re a bully in Wisconsin, your parents could pay the price…literally.  A recently passed anti-bullying measure allows authorities to cite parents of children who repeatedly harass other kids.  Officials say they will only ticket parents who are “obstructive or uncooperative” and that the law will be used as a last resort.  Parents can only receive a citation if they’ve already been warned by the police about their child’s bullying. The groundbreaking anti-bullying effort is reportedly a response to the recent increase in teen suicides and school shootings.  Experts say it will hopefully encourage parents to become more involved in their children’s lives.
