Mike and the Lions baseball team...

In college baseball, the 15-9 Southeastern Lions
host the Houston Baptist Huskies in a 3-game Southland Conference series. The Lions, 4-2, in conference play send junior right-hander Andro Cutura to the hill in tonight's 6 o'clock opener. Cutura, a Pearl River High product, has posted a 3-1 record with a solid 2.23 earned run average. Cutura has started six games, recording one complete game. He's pitched  40 and a third innings, registering a team-high 45 strikeouts, while issuing 10 walks. Opponents are batting .252 against Cutura.
I received a text from Andro's mom, Denise, this morning and she wanted me to give him a Lake 94.7 "Shout Out", wishing him good luck in tonight's scheduled start versus Houston Baptist. Denise texted, "his family and friends are so proud of him." Then Denise went on to wish me a beautiful 'Rainy' day. So good luck to Andro and his Lions' teammates in tonight's game weather permitting of course. Andro Cutura is the older brother of Christina and Marlena, members of the Pope John Paul II Lady Jaguars Division III state soccer champions, coached by the Metro Coach of the Year, J. B. Mahoney.
Sophomore starter Tate Scioneaux, who is 5-0 with an effective 1.66 ERA, takes the hill in tomorrow's second game scheduled for 2 o'clock. The SLU-Houston Baptist series ends Sunday with a 1 o'clock contest with junior Kyle Keller, 2-1, getting the starting nod.

PLAYOFF BASKETBALL

Everything came up Spartans yesterday in LHSAA playoff action on both girls and boys fronts. The defending Class 4A Salmen Lady Spartans continued their championship surge downing the No. 5 seed St. Thomas More Lady Cougars 51-33 in the LHSAA girls' state basketball semifinals in Lake Charles. The nearly unstoppable Kalani Brown delivered big time once again as she recorded a team-high 22 points pulling down an amazing 20 rebounds as she helped control the paint for Salmen. She also contributed four blocks with two assists. Hayley Pichon also sparkled in the semifinal victory collecting 13 points with eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Megan Brown came through with another solid performance dropping in 11 points to go with seven rebounds, three steals and three assists. The 32-1 Salmen ball club has punched its ticket for a return trip to the state championship game scheduled for this Saturday at Burton Colesium in Lake Charles. The Lady Spartans are making their third consecutive appearance in the championship game and will take on the winner of No. 2 seed Warren Easton and No. 3 DeRidder, which are scheduled to play tonight at 8 o'clock in Lake Charles. The Class 4A championship contest is set for this Saturday tipping off at 8 so the Lady Spartans coached by Kevin Anderson are ready to defend their crown. Coach Anderson said Salmen's man-to-man defense was big in the fourth quarter holding St. Thomas More to just four points. Anderson credited Kalani Brown with controlling the boards with her 20 rebounds. Anderson also credited Haley pichon and Megan Brown with delivering when they needed them. He said the girls are definitely excited about returning to the championship game to defend their title.
In boys' Class 4A playoff action from yesterday, the Salmen Spartans continued to deliver as they rolled past No. 24 Beau Chene 58-37 in a regional round road victory spearheaded by senior Dwayne Williams, who finished with a team-high 16 points. The 23-8, No. 8 seed Spartans, advance to the quarterfinals and face a major challenge squaring off with No. 1 seed Landry/Walker, a 53-36 winner over No. 16 Edna Karr. Salmen has the home court advantage in a 7 o'clock tip off tomorrow night, hosting the Chargin' Bucs. In yesterday's victory over Beau Chene, junior Corey Vinson was clutch adding 15 points including knocking down 6-of-6 free throws late in the final three minutes. Junior Chris Vickers netted 14 points and junior Cody Rudolph chipped in with 11 points. Salmen coach Jay Carlin said Rudolph, Vickers and Williams controlled the glass for the Spartans, while Pitts, Vickers and Vinson handled the backcourt pressure. Coach Carlin went on to say his team has grown up in the last month and hopefully they can keep it up heading into Friday's quarterfinals.
In Class 5A regional round action, No. 22 seed Hammond was knocked out of the playoffs, falling to No. 6 Dutchtown 64-35 last night at home.

SSA and ST Pauls: Champs!!!!

St. Tammany Parish known for being a soccer rich area got richer over the weekend with the St. Scholastica Academy Doves and coach Mike Ortner bringing home the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Divison I girls' state title and the St. Paul's Wolves coached by Sean Moser delivering the Division I boys' state crown over the weekend participating at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans.
SSA, the No. 1 seed, made its sixth consecutive trip to the championship match, and the Doves put three years of runner-up frustration behind them, earning a thrilling 1-0 victory over No. 2 seed Lafayette on a game-winning goal by senior Kate Gutterman in a rematch of last year's championship contest. Gutterman's blast came with 3-minutes remaining in the second 10-minute overtime. SSA's Maegen "Ish" Due, who was voted the Outstanding Player in the championship match primarily for her defensive work on Lafayette senior Alexcia Alexander keeping her and her Mighty Lions teammates off the board. Due was called upon to take a free kick from about 35 yards out and she got off a perfectly placed laser toward the back post and found the foot of Gutterman, who polished off the eventual game-winner. Following Gutterman's blast, the SSA defense did the rest shutting down Lafayette's attack to secure the championship for the fired up Doves.

The Doves' defense was absolutely spectacular during their playoff run not allowing a goal in the five playoff victories. Senior goal keeper Elena Naccari and her defensive teammates sparkled in the championship victory. The two teams met in last year's championship contest with Lafayette winning it 2-1. SSA finishes the season 23-2 and will proudly place their newly garnered championship trophy next to their 2007, 2009 and 2010 championship hardware at their Covington campus. The high-flying Doves will be my guest this Thursday night on Northshore Sports broadcasting from 7-8 at WOW Cafe on Highway 190 in Covington. You can join head coach Mike Ortner and some of his SSA championship players on the this week's show.
In the boys' Division I finale, the 24-1-1 St. Paul's Wolves, the No. 2 seed, had to be patient waiting through a 1-hour and 20-minute delay due to a lighting outage following the SSA victory over Lafayette. The delay didn't hamper the St. Paul's performance as the Wolves took care of business with a superlative outing garnering a 3-0 victory over No. 8 seed Grace King. St. Paul's junior Eric Guin delivered two goals and was named the Outstanding Player, while Cameron Robinson, the Wolves' top goal scorer also found the range to spearhead the victory. St. Paul's dominated the time of possession and the Wolves's defense was absolutely spectacular throughout turning away the Grace King offense repeatedly, allowing just one quality shot on goal, which was turned back by junior keeper Colin Hanley. St. Paul's defense only allowed one goal in their playoff run. St. Paul's got rid of the sour taste of being the Division I state runner up for the last two years. Grace King finished 26-3-4.
