St. Tammany Parish and Lifeway World Changers

What:   Youth volunteers will give new life to 23 homes of low to moderate-income families in St. Tammany Parish. Materials used to complete the repairs, like lumber, paint, windows and doors, are purchased through the Community Development Block Grant (CBDG).

When:  Monday, June 24-Saturday, June 29, 2013

Where: The New Claiborne area along Hwy 36 between Abita Springs and Covington
                Area includes: Dahlia St., Violet St., Eden St., Dogwood St., Emancipation St., United Church Rd., 11th St., 12th St., and Arthur Rd.

Why:     This is the second year the group, whose mission in part is to, “…provide Christian youth and adults with opportunities to serve a community physically and spiritually through practical learning experiences that teach servant-hood and a personal commitment to missions,” has worked with St. Tammany Parish Government. The beneficiaries were selected through an application process, and most are disabled and/or elderly.

According to weather experts, the temperatures will continue to stay in the high eighties and low to mid-nineties for the foreseeable future. It is crucial to find a place to get inside and cool off during the hottest times of the day. The elderly and young children are especially susceptible to the effects of heat including, dehydration, heatstroke, heat edema, heat rash, heat syncope and heat exhaustion.

For residents living in poverty, finding a respite from the heat may not be easy. Many fall behind on their utility and rent or mortgage bills, and are unable to insulate their homes against the elements.

The St. Tammany Parish DHHS, Community Action Agency can often offer a hand up to these citizens in need. They can assist families who have experienced a hardship and are unable to pay their utility, rent, and/or mortgage bills. The household must meet income poverty guidelines, have not been helped with an emergency in the past 12 months, and show proof of hardship. These services are for St. Tammany Parish residents exclusively.

Clarence Powe, Deputy Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, addressing the liaisons from all the municipalities, Sherriff, School Board, CLECO, WST Electric, AT&T, State agencies, National Guard, and many other groups that work in coordination during a disaster.

St. Tammany Parish Government employees, who during a disaster change jobs to work as call takers, answering call from citizens and collecting information from the public.

LA 21 Bicycle and Pedestrian Feasibility Study


St. Tammany Parish and the Regional Planning Commission, working with Meyer Engineers, LTD and Dana Brown & Associates is completing a feasibility study of the LA 21 area between Madisonville and Covington in St. Tammany Parish to improve pedestrian and bicycling access and safety. They will be holding a public meeting on Thursday, June 13, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at 21490 Koop Drive in Mandeville. The purpose of this meeting is to present findings and to obtain input from local citizens regarding strategies, corridors and projects identified in the study. Strategies consider present and future conditions including commercial corridor development, high and increasing volume of traffic, neighborhood access to amenities and jobs as well as bicycling and walking for recreation and commuting to work. The public is asked to attend to provide feedback and help inform steps moving forward.

Firefighters Help Teach Math

Firefighters Help Teach Math Lesson at Florida Ave. Elementary

On Tuesday May 14, 2013 St. Tammany Fire District #1 firefighters met with the 6^th graders at Florida Ave. Elementary in Slidell to discuss how math is used in the fire service.  Mrs. Karen Tesei, the 6^th grade teacher at Florida Ave. Elementary, contacted the fire department to see if firefighters would be willing to help demonstrate how math is used on the job. 

On the initial visit firefighters discussed how math is used to calculate the occupant load for buildings as well as swimming pool occupancy, insuring safety.  Additionally a firefighter, who dives recreationally, shared with the students how important math is in personal safety when diving.  The firefighters brought a ladder truck and rescue truck to school to demonstrate to intrigued students how they use math calculations to flow water through the fire hoses at the correct pressures.  The firefighters used a 200 foot booster reel hose to demonstrate water flow using precise mathematical calculations.  The kids were divided into two groups.  Each group got the chance to feel the water flow from the nozzle at various pressures as well as see the operation of the pump panel which supplied water to the hose. 

In conclusion, firefighters were able to teach the 6^th graders how math is used to fight fire and keep people safe.

Early voting for the May 4, 2013 General Election will begin on Saturday, April 20, 2013 and end on Saturday, April 27, 2013. Early voting hours are 8:30 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. daily through the early voting period, closed on Sunday. The Covington office is located at 701 North Columbia Street, the Slidell Office is at 520 Old Spanish Trail in the Conference Area on the ground floor, and the Mandeville Office is located at 21490 Koop Drive. Fire Rescue Drill

On Monday April 15, 2013 St. Tammany Fire Districts 1, 7, & 11 from Slidell and Pearl River took part in a multi-agency drill at the Lafarge mining facility in Pearl River.  The purpose of the drill was to simulate a trauma injury and how firefighters and Lafarge personnel would work together to rescue a victim.  The Lafarge mining facility utilizes hoppers and conveyor belts that are 30 to 40 feet high to mine for the gravel that is used in concrete.  Due to the height of the equipment, any accidents could result in traumatic injuries for its personnel.  Firefighters are trained in high angle rescue which would be needed should an accident occur at the top of these platforms.

Statement released by Slidell Police Dept;  Daniel Seuzeneau

"In June of 2012, Joshua and Sharon Hakken were staying at a local hotel in Slidell.  The Slidell Police Department was called in reference to a disturbance involving Mr. and Mrs. Hakken.  When police arrived, both Mr. and Mrs. Hakken were acting in a bizarre manner that alarmed officers.  They were talking about "completing their ultimate journey" and were traveling across the country to "take a journey to the Armageddon".  Let it be noted that both of their children were present in the hotel room at the time.

Based off their behavior, and the fact that narcotics and weapons were located inside of the hotel room, officers contacted the Office of Child Services (OCS).  OCS determined that the children were in danger and needed to be taken into custody by the State of Louisiana and temporarily placed in a foster home.  Mr. Hakken was placed under arrest for Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and the Use of a Controlled and Dangerous Substance in the Presence of Minors.  Officers also took custody of several weapons for safe keeping.

Approximately two weeks later, Slidell Police were notified that Mr. Hakken had shown up to the foster family home (somewhere in Hammond, LA) with a firearm demanding the return of his children.  The foster parents called 911, and Mr. Hakken fled without his children.  We have heard nothing until yesterday.  Slidell Police was contacted by the FBI and the authorities from Florida to inform us about the kidnapping.  They requested any and all information that we had on the Hakken's.

Other than the arrest made by the Slidell Police Department, the Hakken's have no known connection to Slidell.  The Slidell Police Department posted the Amber Alert from Florida on our Facebook page yesterday afternoon, and also informed all of our officers about the situation as a precautionary measure.  We have no reason to believe that Mr. Hakken will return to Slidell, but since we have dealt with him in the past, we wanted to make everyone aware that there is a possibility he could return for some reason or another."

US 190 FROM I-12 TO LA 22 LANE CLOSURE

 US 190 FROM I-12 TO LA 22 LANE CLOSURE

St. Tammany Parish

There will be alternating lane closures on US 190 Eastbound for motorists headed south towards the Causeway, from I-12 (mile point 247.41) to LA 22 (mile point 250.36), beginning Monday, March 25, 2013 through Thursday, March 28, 2013, from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM.  Maintenance crews will be performing roadway repair, weather permitting.

Permit/Detour Section

One lane will remain open at all times, however, motorists may wish to take an alternate route to avoid traffic delays.  An alternate route for Eastbound motorists headed south towards the Causeway would be to take I-12 Eastbound at the I-12/US 190 interchange to LA 59, take LA 59 Southbound to US 190, take US 190 Westbound to the US 190/LA 22/Causeway Blvd. interchange.
