New Orleans Pelicans edge Dallas Mavericks

The New Orleans Pelicans won their second consecutive close ballgame last night edging the
Dallas Mavericks 94-92 on the road in preseason action. Anthony Davis poured in a game-high 25
points with seven rebounds as the Pels placed five players in double figures. Brian Roberts
contributed 17 points with four assists, three rebounds and two steals. Jrue Holiday chipped in
with 13 points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals, while Ryan Anderson added 12 points
with six rebounds including five offensive boards. Anthony Morrow starting in place of Eric
Gordon finished with 11 points followed by Austin Rivers with nine points, two rebounds, two
assists and two steals. The Pelicans, who played without Tyreke Evans, who
is out with an ankle injury, return to action tomorrow night playing the Orlando Magic in
their third consecutive road game in the preseason.     

SSA Volleyball participates in Newman Tournament

St. Scholastica Academy volleyball participated in the Newman Tournament over the weekend turning in a solid performance. SSA, 16-8 overall, topped the host Newman Greenies, 25-18, 25-22 Saturday. Natalie Helm led the Doves with five kills, three aces, two digs and a block. Maddie Morris contributed four kills
with six digs and three aces. Emma Estapa netted 15 assists and Gabby Chaix added two kills with
two blocks. Ellen Feringa chipped in with three aces and pulled up three digs. SSA came up short falling to Ascension Episcopal Saturday, 25-15, 25-18. Estapa finished with 16 assists and four digs for the Doves. Alexis Barcia and Jessica Lucio led the way with four kills each, while Helm and Morris delivered three kills each.
In Friday's action, SSA downed Morgan City, 25-11, 25-20 with Estapa handing off 16 assists
with four digs and four aces, while Helm put down five kills. SSA topped Westminster, 25-6,
25-11. Helm delivered six aces and Chaix registered six kills with two aces. Jessica
Bourgeois added five digs and two aces for the Doves.

Mettenberger on the mark versus Mississippi State

LSU's Tigers returned to the winning side of the ledger rolling past the Mississippi State
Bulldogs 59-26 in an offensive explosion breaking open a close ballgame in the third
quarter.
LSU, the 10 ranked team in the nation, returns home to Death Valley this week hosting the
Florida Gators in a 2:30 kickoff with the game being aired on CBS.
Zach Mettenberger was sharp in the victory moving the Tigers to 5-1 and 2-1 in the SEC.
Mettenberger completed 25-of-29 attempts for 340 yards with two TDs, leading the Tigers to 28
fourth quarter points. Odell Beckham Jr., had a career night hauling in nine receptions for 179
yards. Beckham was on the receiving end of TD tosses covering 14 and 33 yards from Mettenberger. Jarvis Landry, who battled through an injury finished with eight receptions for 96 yards.
Running back Jeremy Hill handled the ground game rushing for 157 yards with TD runs of 69 and 5
yards. Kenny Hilliard chipped in with three scores and rushed for 39 yards.
Les Miles earned his 90th career victory with the Tigers.

Pelicans trim Houston in preseason opener

The New Orleans Pelicans edged the Houston Rockets and newly acquired center Dwight Howard,
116-115 in the NBA preseason opener Saturday on the road.
Guard Anthony Morrow, a fifth-year pro out of Georgia Tech, topped the Pelicans with 26 points
and five rebounds, starting for Eric Gordon, who was kept out, trying to work his way back into
playing shape after undergoing off season ankle surgery.  
Pels' guard Tyreke Evans injured an ankle early in the second quarter with x-rays proving
negative, but he will undergo an MRI. Evans twisted his ankle when he landed awkwardly after
making a running shot in the lane.
Anthony Davis finished with 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting.
Howard, the Rockets free-agent acquisition played 17 minutes, scoring 19 points with 9 rebounds.
James Harden topped the Rockets with 21 points. The Pelicans return to action tonight playing
the Dallas Mavericks on the road.

Saints' Pierre Thomas leads victory over Bears

Quarterback Drew Brees and coach Sean Payton, accomplished a first yesterday in their era,
picking up a key road victory over Chicago downing the Bears 26-18 at Soldier Field.
The Saints, 5-0, joined the Denver Broncos and surprising Kansas City Chiefs as the only
remaining unbeaten teams in the NFL.
Drew Brees, who passed for 288 yards and two touchdowns to Pierre Thomas, saw his 300 or more
yards passing record halted at nine games.
Brees continued to find Jimmy Graham, who finished with 10 catches for 135 yards. Thomas
delivered nine receptions for 55 yards, including TDs of 2 and 25 yards from Brees.
The Saints 'D' played solid football again sacking Bears' QB Jay Cutler three times and
forced a key first quarter fumble, recovered by Cameron Jordan.
Garrett Hartley converted all four of his field goal attempts after the Saints stalled and
failed to pick up first downs in third-and-short yardage situations.
Chicago's Matt Forte, who starred at Slidell High and Tulane University, had a productive
game, rushing for 55 yards on 12 carries and caught four passes for 40 yards.
The Saints travel to New England this week to battle the 4-1 Patriots, who dropped their first
game of the season, falling to Cincinnati, 13-6.
Denver's Peyton Manning threw for over 400 yards and four touchdowns yesterday leading the
Broncos to a dramatic 51-48 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Tony Romo threw for 506 yards
with five touchdowns, but he was picked off late in the fourth quarter, setting up a Broncos'
game-winning field goal.
