Lakeshore Boys Soccer on Northshore Sports

We enjoyed a great visit with Lakeshore's boys soccer team last week. In the pic, kneeling left to right are Bradley Villars and Brandon Paulsen. Mandeville over Northshore

In a key District 6-5A basketball game last night, the Mandeville Skippers downed the Northshore Panthers 69-51 at home sparked by Hunter Dugas' game-high 32 points and 18 from Logan Barragan to jump into a first place tie with Northsore. Mandeville and Northshore stand at 11-2 in the district race with one district contest remaining this week. Mandeville, 22-8,  plays the Covington Lions tomorrow at 5, while Northshore closes out district play with rival Slidell Friday night at 7. If both Mandeville and Northshore win they would tie for district since they split their two games. With that scenario a playoff game for seeding purposes would take place this Saturday at 3 o'clock at Lakeshore High  gym, a neutral site. Northshore's KJ Hopkins delivered 16 points for the Panthers followed by Will Claiborne and Brett McNeese with 13 points each.   

Local highschool soccer playoff action

A couple of St. Tammany Parish boys' soccer teams continued to make their mark in the LHSAA state playoffs winning in yesterday's quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals, which need to be played by this Saturday.

In Division I, the No. 2 seed St. Paul's Wolves were victorious stopping No. 7 Captain Shreve 4-1 last night at Hunter Stadium on a second-half hat trick by Cameron Robinson, the Wolves' leading scorer. St. Paul's Davis Neitzschman netted a goal in the ninth minute to give the Wolves the early advantage. Grant Hebert and Byron Morgan were credited with excellent ball movement setting up Neitzschman. St. Paul's coach Sean Moser named Christian Caragliano, the Wolves' MVP. The Captain Shreve Gators tallied the equalizer in the 30th minute. The Wolves' 24-1-1 will battle the No. 6 Jesuit Blue Jays Saturday at Hunter Stadium with the game time still to be determined. Jesuit, the defending Division I champions, after they secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over St. Paul's in last year's championship tilt. St. Paul's and Jesuit have established themselves as the two premier boys Division I soccer clubs in the state representing the Northshore and the Southshore as they have met for the coveted state championship for the last three years. The Blue Jays have bragging rights winning two of the three state championship matches. Saturday's rivalry semifinal match has the makings of being a special encounter for both clubs as they try to advance to the championship match scheduled for Friday February 28th at Tad Gormley Stadium.

In Division III quarterfinal action, the No. 2 seed Northlake Christian School Wolverines kept their championship hopes alive earning a hard-fought 1-0 victory over No. 7 Holy Savior Menard on a goal by Mason Morise. NCS, 20-3-2, advances to the semis, and will host No. 6 Newman at Wolverine Stadium. NCS coach Nick Chetta named his back line as the defensive players of the match with Josh "Catfish" Landry posting the Wolverines' third consecutive playoff shutout, registering three saves on free kicks. Coach Chetta said, his team still has "unfinished business" reference getting back to the state championship game.

In Division II quarterfinal action from yesterday, the No. 4 seed Lakeshore Titans came up short falling to No. 5 St. Thomas More 2-0. Lakeshore trailed 1-0 at the half. Lakeshore coach Andrew Knock named Ethan Leger his top defender, while keeper Jordan Hall netted three saves. The Titans, who finish the season 14-5-3, will be appearing tomorrow night with their head coach on Northshore Sports broadcasting live from WOW Cafe in Covington. Join me for tomorrow night's show, which airs from 7-8 p.m. 

PJP Basketball

Pope John Paul II Jaguars downed Mt. Hermon 54-44 Friday at home to earn the District 8-2A basketball title. PJP's Joe Feraci topped the Jags with 23 points. Feraci also added three assists and two rebounds, while Marcus Rome delivered eight points with 10 rebounds. Codey Davie chipped in with eight points and four rebounds. PJP II, 11-13 overall, finished 6-2 in district play tied with Northlake Christian School, but the Jaguars win the district crown, by virtue of the tie breaker with the Wolverines.
NCS, downed Pine 51-43 Thursday with Josh O'Rear finishing with 20 points and 13 rebounds fashioning one of his patented double-doubles.  Matt Miller contributed 14 points, while Matt Whelan totaled seven points for the Wolverines. NCS finished 6-2 in the district race with PJP II, but finishes second based on the tie breaker with the Jaguars.   

Soccer Playoff Update

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association state soccer playoffs took to the pitch Saturday. In Division II quarterfinal action, the No. 5 seed Lakeshore Lady Titans battled, but came up short, being edged 1-0 on the road by No. 4 seed Vandebilt Catholic. Both teams were up to the task early on and battled through a scoreless first half. Vandebilt Catholic was the beneficiary of a Lakeshore own goal 22 minutes into the second half, which proved to be the game-winner. Lakeshore coach Wes Leake said it was a very competitive match and felt like his team had more first half scoring opporutniites, but were unable to find the back of the net. Leake said the second half was pretty even. Leake named his keeper Ali Bernard his top defender as she was credited with six saves. Congratulations to the Lakeshore Lady Titans, who made their quarterfinal appearance, finishing 14-6-3.

The LHSSA layoffs resume today with a number of St. Tammany Parish teams still in it as they advance to the quarterfinals. In Division I girls action, the No. 1 seed St. Scholastica Academy Doves are hosting District 6-I rival No. 8 Mandeville Lady Skippers tonight at 6 o'clock in key quarterfinal action. SSA, the co-district champs, enter with a 20-2 mark, while Mandeville stands at 25-5-1. Both SSA and Mandeville have posted two playoff shut out victories advancing to the quarters. No. 4 seed Fontainebleau, 22-2, is on the road tonight, tangling with No. 5 Dominican at Pan American Stadium in a 7 o'clock match.

In Division III, three quality St. Tammany Parish teams are still in it vying for potential state championships. No. 1 seed Pope John Paul II, 19-1-1, is at home this evening, hosting No. 8 Episcopal at six o'clock over at Lester Latino Field in Slidell. No. 7 Archbishop Hannan, 16-4-2, travels to No. 2 Newman this afternoon in a 5 o'clock quarterfinal match.
No. 12 Northlake Christian School's Lady Wolverines are at home today hosting No. 4 Academy of Sacred Heart in a 6 o'clock match.

Northshore over Hammond

Northshore's Panthers, the defending District 6-5A champs, turned back the 

Hammond Tornadoes 75-67 Friday and remained in first place in the district 

race. The Panthers, 14-11 overall and 11-1 in district play, hold a one game 

advantage over the Mandeville Skippers. The Panthers and Skippers square off 

tomorrow night at Mandeville to determine the district champion. A Northshore 

victory over Mandeville would clinch the outright title for the Panthers. 

Northshore's KJ Hopkins delivered for the Panthers dropping in 22 points with 

seven rebounds and three assists. Will Claiborne was solid once again posting a 

double-double scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Brett McNeese contributed 

12 points and five assists for the victorious Panthers.  

Mandeville Girls Soccer on Northshore Sports

We had a great chat with the ladies from Mandeville last night and wish them well in the playoffs!!!

Northshore's Panthers continued their winning ways and remained atop the 

District 6-5A standings following a 81-70 victory over the Fontainebleau 

Bulldogs. Northshore's Josh Calvin netted 17 points, connecting on 5-of-9 

three-point attempts. Will Claiborne registered a double-double with 14 

points and 11 rebounds, while KJ Hopkins finished with 14 points and four 

steals for the Panthers. Brett McNeese contributed eight points with four 

assists and Derrick McDonald added eight points with three assists. 

Northshore 12-11 after a 3-10 start, stand at 9-1 in district play. Northshore 

travels to St. Paul's tomorrow to battle the Wolves. 

In other District 6-5A boys' action, the second place Mandeville Skippers 

earned a 46-32 victory over arch-rival St. Paul's, setting a new district 

home attendance record with a crowd of over 1,000 fans. Logan Barrigan, 

a 1,000-point scorer for the Skippers, poured in 20 points followed by 

Hunter Dugas with 14. Mandeville upped its record to 19-8 and trails the 

district front running Northshore Panthers by one game at 8-2 in district play.   

Soccery Playoffs

The opening round of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association boys and girls 

state soccer playoffs concluded on Saturday and a number of St. Tammany Parish 

clubs continued their winning ways in their march for potential coveted 

championships in Divisions I, II and III. in girls' Division I action from 

Friday, the No. 1 seed St. Scholastica Academy rolled past No. 32  seed West 

Jefferson 13-0 with Taylor Lambert, Kate Gutterman and Courtney Robicheaux 

netting two goals each to help spark the Doves' bi-district round playoff 

explosion. SSA, 19-2, named  Kristen Stuckey its top defender and the Doves 

advance to the regional round hosting No. 16 Archbishop Chapelle, a 3-1 winner 

over No. 17 Denham Srpings. The SSA-Chapelle match takes place tonight at 6 o'clock 

at the Art Lyons Athletic Complex. No. 4 seed Fontaienbleau Lady Bulldogs 

blanked No. 29 Chalmette 12-0 Friday at the Dawg Pound after building a 6-0 

halftime advantage. Four players, Savannah Camarda, Abby Pence, Danielle 

Sabathe and Chelsea Stiebing each netted two goals to help spearhead the 

Lady Bulldogs' attack. Gabi Cerise, Maddie Cerise, Diana Goff and Allie White 

tallied one goal each. Fontainebleau 22-2 hosts No. 13 West Monroe Wednesday 

at 5 o'clock. No. 11 Northshore's Lady Panthers blanked No. 22 New Iberia 2-0 

on two goals by Samantha Jordan. Jordan netted an unassisted goal in the 20th 

minute and tacked on her second goal 20 minutes into the second half assisted 

by Kristen Delhome. Northshore named Sha-Sha Lee its top defender and keeper 

Jade Gallaher played lights out according to coach Jeff Dunlop. Northshore, 

13-7-1 advances and travels to No. 6 St. Joseph's Academy, a 4-0 winner over 

No. 27 Central Lafourche.
In Division II, the No. 15 Pearl River Lady Rebels raced past No. 18 East 

Jefferson 11-1 and now travels to No. 2 St. Thomas More, who had a first-round 

bye. 
In Division III, No. 7 seven seed Archbishop Hannan blanked No. 26 North Caddo 

7-0 on two second half goals by Shannon Reilly and single goals by Stefa 

Harvey, Lizzie Frank, Hannah Duplechain, Megan Reilly and Theresa Goldkamp. 

Hannan named Olivia Sanchez its top defender and Jensen Volz was the winning 

keeper.
Archbishop Hannan, 15-4-2, hosts No. 10 Metairie Park Country Day  thias 

afternoon at 5 o'clock. 
In today's girls' Division II playoff action, No. 5 seed Lakeshore, following 

a first-round bye, hosts No. 12 seed West Ouachita this afternoon at 5 o'clock. 
In Division III, No. 1 seed Pope John Paul II, 18-1-1, is on the road 

today, taking on No. 17 Holy Savior Menard.    

Local signing

Dalvin Populist signed with UL Rajun Cajuns. He signed as a quarterback. UL feels he could be their future at the quarterback position. He leaves Northshore having won the offensive MVP two years in a row. Dalvin threw for over a thousand yards and ran the same in his senior year. Coach Bourg feels he has a bright future on the college level.

NS Soccer Playoffs for the Boys

Ten St. Tammany Parish boys soccer teams received good news yesterday as the Louisiana High School Athletic Association released the playoff brackets for Divisions I, II and III.
In Division I there were five St. Tammany Parish clubs listed including No. 2 seed St. Paul's Wolves. St. Paul's opens the bi-district round tomorrow, hosting No. 31 seed Central of Baton Rouge with a 5:30 start at Hunter Stadium.

Mandeville's Skippers enter as the No. 9 seed and will host No. 24 Airline tomorrow at 4:30. The Northshore Panthers are a No. 10 seed and host No. 23 Hahnville this Saturday at 5 p.m. Fontainebleau's Bulldogs are seeded No. 18 and will travel to No. 15 Caddo Magnet for a 4:30 match tomorrow. The Covington Lions drew a No. 29 seed and are on the road against No. 4 Acadiana.

In Division II, the Lakeshore Titans, drew a No. 4 seed and a first-round bye. The Titans will advance and play the winner of No. 13 Lutcher and No. 20 Westgate. Pearl River is No. 18 seed and travels to No. 15 Leesville tomorrow for a 5 o'clock match. The Salmen Spartans come in at No. 22 and travel to No. 11 Loyola Prep.

In Division III, the No. 2 seeded Northlake Christian School Wolverines, host No. 31 seed St. Frederick tomorrow at 4 o'clock. Pope John Paul II is the No. 17 seed and travels to No. 16 Parkview Baptist.

Switching to the girls bracket, which was announced on Tuesday, there are nine St. Tammany Parish clubs entering the soccer playoffs and three of them are in action today. In Division I play this afternoon, the No. 8 seeded Mandeville Lady Skippers host No. 25 Hahnville at 6 o'clock. In Division II action, the No. 1 seed Pope John Paul II Lady Jaguars host the No. 32 Academy of Sacred Heart this afternoon at 5. No. 12 seed Northlake Christian School is also in action today hosting No. 21 Ascension Episcopal at 6 p.m.

Salmen rolls

The Salmen Lady Spartans continued their mastery over opponents flirting with the century mark rolling past St. Scholastica Academy 97-19. Megan Brown spearheaded the Lady Spartans' attack with 23 points and five assists. Salmen upped its record to 23-1 and reamined unbeaten at 4-0 in district play. Salmen's Tiara Warren netted 19 points with seven steals and seven assists. Kalani Brown registered another outstanding effort with a double-double, scoring 17 points with 10 rebounds. She also dominated inside posting six blocks with five steals. 

St Pauls District Champs

In Friday boys high school soccer action the St. Paul's Wolves clinched the District 6-I crown rolling past Slidell 8-1 with Cameron Robinson leading the way with a sterling performance netting three goals and two assists. Austin Groeneveld tallied two goals, while Christian Caragliano, Eric Guin and Andrew Brouillette added one goal each. Guin added an assist, while Tyler Murphy and Trevor Watkins were also credited with assists for the Wolves.

PJP II and Archbishop Hannan girls soccer teams meet in prayer following Saturday's match played at Hannan

Congratulations to the Pope John Paul II Lady Jaguars, who secured the District 8-3 title Friday blanking St. Thomas Aquinas 7-0. Freshman Marlena Cutura fashioned a hat trick with two assists to spark the attack. Christina Cutura delivered two goals with two assists, while Jessica Mahoney added two goals with an assist.

PJP II, 17-1,1, closed out district play Saturday earning a 5-1 victory over Archbishop Hannan. The Lady Jags finished 6-0 in district play spearheaded once again by the Cutura sisters, Christina and Marlena, along with Jessica Mahoney, who accounted for all five goals. PJP II coach JB Mahoney credited his team with an excellent match aganst a quality Archbishop Hannan club. Mahoney said, "the one thingI have said all year is that we are so attack minded as a team. The combination play in the final third is hard to defend. In addition our back line is strong and our keeper Alexis Molero is active off her line, which supports the back four," Mahoney added. In Saturday's match, Hannan played without starting freshman keeper Shaye Trednich, who is out with a broken bone in her foot. Lady Hawks' eighth grader Courtney St. John filled in and did a good job. Hannan also played Central of Baton Rouge and won 3-0 Sautrday on two goals by Megan Reilly and one by Hannah Duplechain. Hannan finishes the regular season 14-4-2 and was the district runner up at 3-3 behind PJP II.    

Highschool Soccer

In local high school soccer action, Northshore's Dario Cutura broke through 

for two goals following a hard-fought scoreless tie at the half, leading the 

Panthers to a 2-0 victory over the Slidell Tigers. Northshore goal keeper 

Larry Newby was the winning keeper with five saves, while Matt Smith was 

named the Panthers' top defender. Northshore, 16-4-2 and 10-3 in District 

6-I play close out their regular season today at the Covington High Fighting 

Lions. In last night's girls match, Northshore Lady Panthers won their match 2-1.
