MHS-Archbishop Shaw Scrimmage

The Mandeville Skippers, who have earned two consecutive state semi finals appearances hosted
the Archbishop Shaw Eagles yesterday in a scrimmage held at Sidney Theriot Stadium. Both
teams put their best foot forward with the defense's dominating the action with only one
score being allowed.
Archbishop Shaw senior quarterback Quenten Gibson found fellow senior Bayson Simmons on a
70-yard hookup to account for the lone score. The scrimmage closed out with a 15-minute game-
like quarter. On Mandeville's first possession, facing third-and-seven, Skippers' senior
quarterback Glenn Cuiellette rolled out to his right and fired a strike down field to Drew
Graham, who made a nice catch along the sideline for an apparent 35-yard gain. Unfortunately, the
play was nullified on a holding call.
Archbishop Shaw picked up three first downs on their possession, but the Eagles' drive was
halted when junior Koree Hollins picked off a pass on a third-and-one play.
With 3:08 left, Mandeville went three-and-out, turning the ball over to Shaw with just 31
seconds remaining. With two ticks left, Shaw attempted a 36-yard field goal, but it came up
short, ending the scrimmage.
Mandeville only returns three starters on defense, but head coach Guy LeCompte praised
their effort. "Our defense played well. We did have that one blown coverage and they were able to capitalize
on it. Other than that our defense played really well. I feel like the younger guys came in and
played well," said LeCompte.
LeCompte talked about having a new receiving corps and said they have to get on the same
sheet of music with their quarterback," LeCompte stated.
Shaw head coach Scott Bairnsfather talked about yesterday's scrimmage.
"It looks like both of us have some young guys playing in certain spots. They have a really
good quarterback and we have a good quarterback and those guys did a good job," Bairnsfather
said.
"We ran the ball okay. I thought they were feisty on defense. Our defense gave up some
yards, but we kept them off the board and I'm pleased with that. We both have a little bit of
cleaning up to do before we get started in the regular season," Bairnsfather added.
