Archbishop Hannan Hawks and Covington High Fighting Lions advance in football playoffs
On the local St. Tammany Parish high school football scene, we only have two teams remaining in competition for a possible LHSAA state championship.
In Friday night's Lake 94.7 broadcast game of the week, the No. 4 seed Archbishop Hannan Hawks, cruised past the No. 12 seed Pope John Paul II Jaguars, 42-14 on the road in the Division III quarterfinals behind Korey Zeigler's four touchdown passes and 277 yards threw the air. Zeigler connected with Kyle Sewald on three of those, covering 27, 9 and 18 yards. Zeigler also clicked with Daniel Hollander on a 35-yard TD strike and found him on a successful two-point conversion. Michael Froeba handled the Hawks' running game delivering 102 yards on 25 carries with an 18-yard tally. Froeba has rushed for 1,053 yards and 15 touchdowns.
The Hawks, 10-2, advance to the semifinals and will host No. 1 Episcopal Friday night. Episcopal
advanced earning a 28-21 victory over the St. Thomas Aquinas Falcons.
Northlake Christian School, the No. 3 seed in Division III, had its miraculous season, 11-1 come to a close as the Wolverines were upended 60-26, falling to the No. 6 seed Catholic of New Iberia in a disappointing loss at home Friday night.
The other St. Tammany Parish team to advance is the Class 5A Covington High Fighting Lions, the No. 12 seed, who took care of business, downing No. 3 seed East Ascension 28-21 to advance to the quarterfinals behind C. J. Sims' 244 yards rushing on 29 carries with three TDs.
Covingon, 8-4, is on the road this Friday, traveling to No. 11 Central of Baton Rouge, which blanked No. 6 West Monroe 14-0 to advance. Best of luck to the Archbishop Hannan Hawks and the Covington High Fighting Lions n their quest for football supremacy.
