The Covinton High Jamboree took place Friday night at Jack Salter Stadium. In the opener, the
Salmen Spartans squared off with the defending Class 2A state champion John Curtis Patriots.
Curtis took a 40-6 victory as they prepare to defend their state title.
Spartans' head coach Jerry Leonard said his young team will probably experience some growing
pains early in the year.
"We made some mistakes and we have a long way to go. Hopefully, we'll be able to gell," Leonard
said.
Salmen's Joey Mcleod tallied the Spartans' lone score on a 35-yard run.
Salmen opens the season Friday night hosting the Hahnville Tigers in a 7 o'clock kickoff.
In the second game Friday night, the Mandeville Skippers battled the Franklinton Demons to a
14-14 tie in a quality effort by both clubs.
Skippers' head coach Guy LeCompte said he was proud of his team's effort going against a
really good Franklinton team and it was a great learning tool for his players.
"I thought our guys effort was great and they competed. We had some bright spots with Drew
Graham and Parker Orgeron playing really well.
Senior quarterback Glenn Cuiellette completed 9-of-18 passes for 146 yards including a 34-yard
score to Orgeron and a 55-yard strike to Graham.
James Treuting gained 17 yards on four carries.
Skippers' senior linebacker Mason Lemieux and Koree Hollins had interceptions and LeCompte
felt the defense played well played against a talented team Franklinton team.
Covington's Fighting Lions performing under first-year head coach Greg Salter sent the Jack
Salter Stadium crowd home happy blanking the Bogalusa Lumberjacks 29-0.
Coach Salter said he felt his team competed really hard.
"It was a good overall team effort in preparation for the season opener against Holy
Cross," Salter said.
Senior C. J. Sims tallied three touchdowns scoring on runs of 2, 5 and 16 yards, while
gaining 41 yards on five carries. Lions' senior quarterback Dylan Savarese scored on a 7-yard
run. Savarese finished 10-of-16 for 194 yards with a pick and senior Jeremy Haar hauled in
seven catches for 121 yards.
