The NBA regular season tipped off last night with three games on the schedule. Our New Orleans Pelicans with their brand new mascot and new look roster begin their campaign tonight hosting the Indiana Pacers in the newly renovated Arena. The Pacers opened the season last night, fighting off the Orlando Magic,
earning a 97-87 victory. Paul George, an emerging star for the Pacers, led the Indiana attack with 24 points, six rebounds and five assists. The Pacers' Danny Granger, who prepped at Grace King High School in Metairie, is on the shelf and will miss approximately three weeks due to a calf injury.
The Pelicans have gelled during the preseason and closed out play with a 7-1 mark. The Pels had six players average double figures, led by Anthony Davis, who averaged 19.9 points per game and nearly six rebounds. Often injured shooting guard Eric Gordon made his way back into the lineup following his ankle surgery and started four of the eight preseason games for the Pels. Gordon averaged 17 points per contest, averaging
20.8 minutes per game.
In the NBA TNT doubleheader last night, the two-time defending Miami Heat, were presented their championship rings, and then took care of business on the court, turning back the visiting Chicago Bulls, 107-95 led by LeBron James with 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Chicago's Carlos Boozer topped all scorers with 31 points. Derrick Rose made his return to the
Bulls, coming off his knee surgery, finishing with 12 points and just four assists.
In the second part of the televised doubleheader, the Los Angeles Lakers downed the L. A. Clippers, 116-103 with Zander Henry leading the way with 22 points as the Lakers played without Kobe Bryant, who is recovering from his achilles heel surgery.
Blake Griffin led the Clippers with 19 points followed by DeAndre Jordan with 17. Chris Paul netted 15 points with 11 assists and five steals.
