The New Orleans Saints didn't get it done last night in Miami being edged 24-21 by the
Dolphins. The Saints failed in their attempt to capture their first ever unblemished preseason
record as they finished 3-1.
The Saints coaching staff now faces the major task of getting down to the NFL mandatory 53
players by Saturday.
Head coach Sean Payton has said all along that it is important to get the best 53 guys.
Drew Brees and a number of other starters didn't play last night. Undrafted rookie quarterback
Ryan Griffin saw the bulk of the action and finished 15-of-31 for 198 yards with a TD and an
interception.
Khirey Robinson made a strong push towards making the 53-man roster gaining 115 yards on 22
carries, but he fumbled twice. He also caught six passes for 53 yards.
Mark Ingram carried nine times for 49 yards with a score.
The Saints were flagged for 11 penalties, totaling 80 yards.

SLU rolls in season opener
Southeastern Louisiana University looked impressive last night in the season opener and sent the
Lions' Strawberry Stadium enthusiastic crowd of 5,820 home with a convincing 45-7
victory over the Southeast Missouri Redhawks.
Lions' starting quarterback Bryan Bennett showed his dual threat skills as he recorded three
rushing touchdowns finding the end zone from 3, 30 and 7 yards, while clicking on 9-of-15 passes
for 169 yards.
The Lions' offense gained 494 total yards, averaging 7.3 yards per play, rushing for 309,
averaging 6.2 yards per carry, while passing for 185 yards.
Bennett became the Lions' first quarterback to rush for 100 yards since Dean Waguespack gained
122 yards back in 1977.
Bennett, showing off his running and passing ability, was relieved early in the fourth quarter by Jordan
Barnett, who finished 3-of-3 for 16 yards and scored on a one-yard keeper.
Bennett, the former Oregon quarterback, said he enjoyed going into battle with his teammates.
"Competing is just a great thing. I am looking forward to coming back this week and seeing how
much we can progress and how far we can take this thing," Bennett said.
Bennett and Barnett spread the ball around hooking up with nine different Lions' receivers
on the night.
Second-year coach Ron Roberts said he was really pleased with his team's effort.
"Our guys played hard. We made some mistakes, but we played a lot of young men, which is
something that we wanted to do to get them experience, Hopefully, they have those jitters
out of the way," Roberts said.
Defensively, Amite linebacker Drew Misita led the way with five total tackles including three
solo stops and four assists.
Trenon Trosclair and James Scales chipped in with four tackles each.
A number of former St. Tammany Parish players made significant contributions for the Lions
including Fontainebleau High junior Justin Church, who recorded a solo stop with two
assists. Church also blocked a Southeast Missouri field goal attempt.
Church, who switched from defensive end to linebacker, made two consecutive stops on
third-and-two and fourth-and-one situations.
Church talked about the defensive effort on fourth down.
"Our coaches did a good job of putting us in position on that play. I just saw the play
happening and I was able to chase it down," Church said.
The Lions played solid team defense and Church talked about swarming to the ball.
"We put a big focus on that during camp on getting to the ball, which really helped us to
get to the ball," Church added.
Northshore High's Josh Dakin, a sophomore and talented special team's player, recorded two
primary stops and two assists. Dakin was also credited with breaking up a pass.
SLU's special teams did a nice job with senior place kicker Seth Sebastian drilling a 45-yard
field goal and he was true on all six of his extra point attempts.
Covington High grad senior Matt McCormick punted twice averaging 42.5 yards per punt with a long
of 47. McCormick was also the Lions' holder on Sebastian's extra points and field goal attempts.
SLU junior linebacker and starting special team's player, Tyler Tourelle, a St. Paul's graduate, suffered a knee injury on the opening kickoff.
"It's great to get a win in the opener it's definitely what the program needed. We have worked really hard for the past nine months getting to this point. There is a bright future ahead," Tourelle said.
Tourelle said he picked Southeastern for a reason, knowing the football program was headed
in the right direction through everything the coaching staff had done and what the players
have done.
Tourelle said he got encouragement from his teammates during the course of the game
following his injury.
"These are your brothers, you sweat with them and fight with them doing everything together
for at least eight hours a day," Tourelle added.
SLU returns to action next Saturday traveling to TCU to battle the No. 20 ranked Horned Frogs.
The Lions play their next three games on the road followed with a bye week before returning
to Strawberry Stadium on Oct. 5, hosting Incarnate Word.

High School Football Jamborees take center stage
Local high school football programs are making their final preparations for the season hosting
jamborees to sharpen and fine-tune their skills heading into next week's season openers.
The Covington High Fighting Lions host their jamboree beginning at 5 o'clock. The CHS
Jamboree opener pits Jerry Leonard's Salmen Spartans taking on the Class 2A defending state
champion John Curtis Patriots.
Game two features the Mandeville Skippers, the consecutive two-time state semifinalists,
coached by Guy LeCompte, squaring off with the always tough Franklinton Demons coached by Shane
Smith.
The finale, which is scheduled for 8 o'clock tonight, has the host Fighting Lions, battling
the Bogalusa Lumberjacks.
CHS first-year head coach Greg Salter said he liked what he saw in the Lions' scrimmage last
week at Parkview Baptist, competing against Parkview Baptist and Zachary.
"The kids played with a lot of intensity, which was good. Our players were aggressive and very
focused. The coaching staff was happy with the way that everything went," Salter said.
Lions' senior QB Dylan Savarese found Cordora Laurant for a 65-yard scoring play against
Parkview Baptist and C. J. Sims scored on a 57-yard run against Zachary.
The Slidell Tigers under first-year head coach Larry Favre, who returns to the sidelines after
a stint in administration as the St. Tammany Parish Athletic Director, said its fantastic
being back in coaching, working with exceptional young talent.
Farve said his Tigers had a good outing last week scrimmaging the always tough Franklinton
Demons, a former Class 4A state champ.
"It was a great test for us. They are well coached and are a first class ball club. They have a lot of team speed and we went toe-to-toe with them. Our offense really moved the ball, while our defense bent, but didn't break," Favre said.
Farve said his team gave up a lot of yardage to the Demons, but were able to tighten up in the
red zone.
Favre said his club came out of the Franklinton scrimmage feeling really confident.
The Slidell Jamboree gets underway tonight with the Northshore Panthers taking on the Lakeshore
Titans. Panthers' coach Mike LaBourdette is the interim coach filling in for head coach Mike
Bourg.
We want to give coach Mike Bourg a shout out as he continues to recover from his recent heart
surgery. I spoke with him this morning, while he was doing his cardio rehab. I might add he
didn't sound too winded. I'm sure his players would be proud of him.
One of Bourg's former players, Josh Dakin, who is playing for the Southeastern Louisiana
University Lions, asked me to tell his former coach hello and to get well quickly.
Dakin, a sophomore, turned in a good night for the Lions in their 45-7 home opening victory
over Southeast Missouri.
Dakin, a solid special team's player, registered two solo stops and had two assists. Dakin also

The host Tigers close things out in the Slidell Jamboree tonight at 8 o'clock, doing battle with
a speedy talented East Jefferson squad according to coach Favre.
In other jamboree action,
Archbishop Hannan's Hawks go against the Pearl River Rebels tonight at 6 o'clock, competing in
the Chalmette Jamboree.
Pope John Paul II is playing in the Newman Jamboree and takes on Cohen this afternoon at 5

Saints make cuts
The New Orleans Saints trimmed their roster yesterday getting down to the 75-player figure
mandated by the NFL.
The team announced seven transactions yesterday including placing injured linebacker Will Smith out for the season with a knee injury suffered in Sunday's 31-23 preseason victory over the Houston Texans, on the injured reserve list. The Saints also place receiver Joe Morgan, the anticipated deep threat , who tore his anterior cruciate ligament, during a training camp scrimmage on the injured reserve list along with
linebacker Chris Chamberlain, who has an unspecified injury.
Outside linebacker Victor Bulter was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list, out with
a torn ACL, which he suffered during an off-season workout.
The Saints waived three players yesterday including undrafted rookie linebacker Eric
Martin, safety Akwasi Owusu-Amsah and receiver Tim Toone, not to be confused with Nick
Toon, the second-year player out of Wisconsin, who should make the final 53-man roster.
The Saints picked up San Francisco 49ers' linebacker Parys Haralson to fill the void with
Will Smith's injury, giving up a seventh-round draft choice in next year's draft.
Head coach Sean Payton said Haralson will not play in tomorrow's final preseason game on the
road against the Miami Dolphins. The club announced picking up former Buffalo Bills'
corner back Jamal Rolle off waivers.
Payton said quarterback Drew Brees will not see any action in tomorrow night's game against
Miami. It is expected backup Luke McCown will start and play the first quarter. Rookie quarterback Ryan Griffin, undrafted out of Tulane will play the final three quarters as he battles to make the final roster. Both McCown and Griffin have looked solid during the preseason.
Coach Payton said cornerback Patrick Robinson, who saw his first action against Houston, would
likely see more action than many of the other regular starters.

SLU Ron Roberts Radio Show debuts
Southeastern Louisiana University head coach Ron Roberts, beginning his second season with the
Lions, debuted his radio show last night at Tope La Catering in Hammond.
The one-hour radio show is being aired on two of The Lake's sister stations, The Joint 104.7 in Covington and Kajun 107.1 in Hammond.
Roberts previewed the season along with host Allan Waddell. The Lions kickoff the season
Thursday night in Strawberry Stadium, hosting the Southeast Missouri Redhawks in the initial
meeting between the two clubs.
Coach Roberts said he, his staff, players and Lions' fans are anxious to get the season
started and are excited about the upcoming prospects for the year.
Roberts, who guided the Lions to a 5-6 mark and 5-2 Southland Conference record last season,
said this year's club has more depth and that is cause for lots of excitement. Roberts urged fans to Lion Up!
SLU has a number of former Northshore players on the roster and he named a few of them including
Covington High punter senior Matt McCormick, who will handle the Lions' punting chores in the
opener.
Roberts also mentioned that junior Justin Church, a Fontainebleau High grad, has moved

Saints' Will Smith out for the year
The New Orleans Saints' defense received some bad news yesterday announcing that former defensive end Will Smith, who was making the transition to outside linebacker will be lost for the season due to a knee injury suffered in the team's 31-23 preaseason victory Sunday over the Houston Texans.
Smith's injury could prove to be a major blow to the Saints' new 3-4 scheme under defensive
coordinator Rob Ryan already reeling from the injuries to Victor Butler, Jonathan Vilma,
Junior Galette and Martez Wilson..
To fill Smith's void, the Saints traded for San Francisco 49ers' backer Parys Haralson. After
departing the 49ers locker room yesterday Haralson's deferred comment to the 49ers' front
office, other than to say, "I'm outta here."
Reportedly the Saints have offered a seventh-round draft pick in the 2014 draft.
San Francisco's Aldon Smith replaced Haralson in the 49ers lineup last season at right outside
linebacker, and delivered a franchise-record 19 1/2 sacks.
Haralson, a 2006 fifth-round draft pick out of Tennessee, started 68 games in his career and
recorded 21 1/2 sacks in 86 contests before sitting out last season with a torn triceps.
The San Francisco 49ers come to New Orleans Nov. 17.
Will Smith,32, a first-round pick, 18th overall by the Saints out of Ohio State in 2004,
contributed 58 tackles with six sacks last season after taking a pay cut to remain with the
Saints. Smith produced 67.5 sacks in 139 career games as a defensive end before transitioning
to linebacker this year.
The Saints, 3-0, close out the preseason Thursday night on the road, taking on the Miami
Dolphins with a 6:30 kickoff.

MHS-Archbishop Shaw Scrimmage
The Mandeville Skippers, who have earned two consecutive state semi finals appearances hosted
the Archbishop Shaw Eagles yesterday in a scrimmage held at Sidney Theriot Stadium. Both
teams put their best foot forward with the defense's dominating the action with only one
score being allowed.
Archbishop Shaw senior quarterback Quenten Gibson found fellow senior Bayson Simmons on a
70-yard hookup to account for the lone score. The scrimmage closed out with a 15-minute game-
like quarter. On Mandeville's first possession, facing third-and-seven, Skippers' senior
quarterback Glenn Cuiellette rolled out to his right and fired a strike down field to Drew
Graham, who made a nice catch along the sideline for an apparent 35-yard gain. Unfortunately, the
play was nullified on a holding call.
Archbishop Shaw picked up three first downs on their possession, but the Eagles' drive was
halted when junior Koree Hollins picked off a pass on a third-and-one play.
With 3:08 left, Mandeville went three-and-out, turning the ball over to Shaw with just 31
seconds remaining. With two ticks left, Shaw attempted a 36-yard field goal, but it came up
short, ending the scrimmage.
Mandeville only returns three starters on defense, but head coach Guy LeCompte praised
their effort. "Our defense played well. We did have that one blown coverage and they were able to capitalize
on it. Other than that our defense played really well. I feel like the younger guys came in and
played well," said LeCompte.
LeCompte talked about having a new receiving corps and said they have to get on the same
sheet of music with their quarterback," LeCompte stated.
Shaw head coach Scott Bairnsfather talked about yesterday's scrimmage.
"It looks like both of us have some young guys playing in certain spots. They have a really
good quarterback and we have a good quarterback and those guys did a good job," Bairnsfather
said.
"We ran the ball okay. I thought they were feisty on defense. Our defense gave up some
yards, but we kept them off the board and I'm pleased with that. We both have a little bit of
cleaning up to do before we get started in the regular season," Bairnsfather added.

Saints focusing on Houston Texans
The New Orleans Saints continue their march towards opening the season Sept. 8 hosting their feisty NFC South Division rival Atlanta Falcons.
The Saints still have some unfinished business with two preseason games remaining. The Saints, 2-0, at the Dome in the preseason, now take to the road and square off with the 2-0 Houston Texans as they step up in class following victories over the Kansas City Chiefs and the Oakland Raiders at home.
Saints' QB Dree Brees appears to be in mid-season form. In last week's 28-20 victory over Oakland, the Saints' captain, completed 14-of-18 passes for 202 yards with a 16-yard scoring strike to rookie Kenny Stills, who continues to impress the coaching staff. Stills out of Oklahoma appears to be one of the main guys to take over for injured Joe Morgan. Stills caught four passes for a team-high 64 yards including a long gainer of 23 yards to go with his touchdown reception. Darren Sproles continues to be a major part of the Saints' offense as he caught a team-high five passes, covering 35 yards.
Brees said he is looking for a physical contest as the Saints travel to Houston. Brees went on to say you better buckle up the chin strap.
Wide receiver Marques Colston continues to battle a lingering foot injury that has bothered him throughout training camp.
Colston was second on the team last year with 83 catches, just two receptions behind tight end Jimmy Graham. Colston topped the Saints in yardage and touchdowns with 1,154 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.

Tulane scrimmage productive
The Tulane University Green Wave football team conducted a Saturday scrimmage at the Saints'
indoor practice facility in Metairie. The Green Wave running game dominated the team's
60-play scrimmage finding the end zone six times, gaining 230 yards on the ground.
Redshirt freshman running back Lazedrick Thompson tallied two touchdowns, covering 19 and
17 yards, gaining 73 yards on 15 carries. Junior Rob Kelley netted a five-yard TD and picked up
81 yards on nine rushes . Junior back Dante Butler, a Brother Martin grad, gaijned 45 yards,
while freshman walk-on Marshall Wadleigh, a former Northshore High Panther, running back and
special team's player rushed for 22 yards.
Greenie junior QB Jordy Joseph tallied on a keeper from 16 yards out. The Greenies also got it done through the air with junior signal caller Nick Montana, clicking on 6-of-7 attempts for 100 yards with a 15-yard scoring toss to senior receiver JoJo Dobbs, while working in the red zone.
Freshman signal caller Tanner Lee completed six passes for 85 yards including a 6-yard TD to
Devin Boutte.
Defensively, senior corner back L. J. Parker topped the team with five tackles, while junior
linebacker Matthew Bailey notched four stops. Parry Nickerson and Anthony Bronzo intercepted
passes.
Green Wave head coach Curtis Johnson talked about Saturday's scrimmage. "It was pretty good.
The offensive line played outstanding. They did a good job blocking. There were not that many
penalties. There were not that many mess ups and I didn't see that many mentals," Johnson said.
Coach Johnson added that the running backs ran hard and the quarterbacks were sharp.
Johnson went on to say the defensive line played hard, the linebackers ran around and the
secondary played pretty good, we had a couple picks."

Saints trim roster
The New Orleans Saints have begun the process of trimming the roster as the club announced eight
cuts yesterday. The Saints began pairing down the roster terminating the contracts of
quarterback Seneca Wallace, who had a sup par outing in the Black and Gold's 28-20 victory
over the Oakland Raiders in Friday night's game in the Dome. Wallace hit on 3-of-6 passes for
just 32 yards. He was also intercepted and lost a fumble. The Saints also decided to part ways
with a couple of veteran receivers including Steve Breaston and Patrick Crayton, sending a
message that they like what they are seeing out of their young receivers two games into the
preseason. The Saints also waived wide receiver Jarred Fayson, guard Ricky Henry, linebacker
Chase Thomas and corner back Dion Turner. They also parted ways with injured corner back A. J.
Davis, while placing veteran defensive end Kenyon Coleman on injured reserve. Coleman
injured a pectoral muscle during training camp. The Saints appeared to make some improvements in
Friday night's game, moving to 2-0 as the defense played dominant football in the first
half and finished with seven sacks, harassing Raiders' QB Matt Flynn, the former LSU Tiger signal caller, sacking him five times.
One area that still needs improvement is not taking so many penalties. The Saints were
flagged for nine infractions totaling 85 yards, which continues to aggravate head coach Sean
Payton. The Raiders were anemic in that area being called for 12 flags for 127 yards. The unbeaten Saints venture out on the road Sunday for the first time this preseason to square off with the unbeaten Houston Texans, who are also 2-0 coming off their 24-17 victory Saturday over the much improved Miami Dolphins. Sunday's kick off is set for 3 o'clock and will be broadcast on Fox television.

24-6 victory Thursday over Detroit. Mingo spent two days in the hospital and was released on
Saturday. "I'm perfectly fine and my ribs are perfect," said the former Tiger player. "I had

Saints hold off Oakland Raiders
New Orleans Quarterback Drew Brees and the Saints looked tremendous in the first half and then had to hang on to secure a 28-20 preseason game victory in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome Friday night. It was definitely a tale of two halves for the Black and Gold.
The Saints moved to 2-0 in the preseason, winning their second home game, and now take to the road traveling to Houston to battle the Texans. The Texans are also 2-0 after defeating the Miami Dolphins 24-17 on Saturday.
Brees clicked on 14-of-18 attempts for 202 yards. Brees connected on a 16-yard TD toss to rookie receiver Kenny Stills, who continues to impress. Brees, who appeared to be in mid-season form, looked comfortable behind the Saints' O-line and on the Stills' hook-up had 11 seconds to look down field as he went through his progressions as Stills beat former Saint Tracy Porter on the play. Porter and his Raiders' defensive teammates had a rough night and the former Super Bowl hero left the game with a groin injury after tackling Stills on the sideline. Stills caught four passes for 64 yards, while running back Darren Sproles led the way with five short receptions, totaling 35 yards. Brees also hooked up with Al Toon on a 56-yard strike.
Saints' backup quarterback Seneca Wallace struggled as the second-team offense sputtered. Wallace, making his first Saints' appearance, finished 3-for-6 for 32 yards with an interception, while Tulane's Ryan Griffin fighting for a roster spot along with Wallace and Luke McCown, clicked on 5-of-6 attempts for 69 yards.
Kyrie Robinson topped the Saints' ground game with 50 yards on 10 carries, averaging 5-yards per rush and he also caught two passes for 28 yards. Mark Ingram chipped in with 30 yards on nine rushes with a two-yard TD run.
Former LSU Tiger quarterback Matt Flynn had a tough night as the Saints' defense manhandled the Raiders' offensive line, registering five first half sacks on the Bayou Bengal. Despite the intense pressure, Flynn managed to hit on 12-of-16 passes for 124 yards with a touchdown.
Former Saint Osama Young, who is also in camp, saw action in the Raiders' secondary.
The Saints defense dominated play in the first half and finished the night with seven sacks totaling 42 yards in losses.
Linebacker Ramon Humber recorded six solo stops with three assists and a sack. Safety Kenny Vaccaro continued his strong preseason with sure-handed tackling, netting six solo stops.
The Saints were flagged for nine penalties totaling 85 yards, while the Raiders committed 12 infractions, penalized 127 yards.
Saints long-time public address announcer Jerry Romig called his final home game for the Black and Gold closing out his illustrious 44-year career. Saints host Oakland Raiders
The second week of the NFL preseason is finally upon us and tonight the Saints are at home,
hosting the Oakland Raiders with kickoff set for 7 o'clock in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The
Saints are coming off their preseason 17-13 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, while the
Raiders edged the Dallas Cowboys 19-17.
The Saints' injury bug at the linebacker position continued to mount yesterday as
Jonathan Vilma underwent an arthroscopic knee procedure his fourth knee surgery since 2007.
Vilma, 31, will be on the shelf for an unspecified time and coach Sean Payton didn't
give a time frame for his return. Those in the Saints' camp are hoping the next guy up can step
in and fill Vilma's void, which causes issues due to the fact that linebacker Victor Butler is
already out for the season with a knee injury.
One of the lead candidates to take over is six-year veteran David Hawthorne out of TCU, who
signed as a free agent, being picked up from the Seattle Seahawks. Hawthorne, 28, started 10
games last season and saw action in one other contest, but missed five games due to a
hamstring injury.
Hawthorne recorded three tackles in the Saints win over Kansas City and is a confident player.
He finished with 38 tackles last including 22 solo stops.
Hawthorne said, "my opportunity is definitely out there. My whole focus is just to give myself
the best opportunity."
Tonight marks the final appearance by Jerry Romig, the Saints' public address announcer, who
is calling it quits after an illustrious 44-year career with the Black and Gold. It will be
interesting to see how many times he will have the opportunity to say his trademark call,
"First Down, Saints!" Fans are hoping it will be a multitude of times and the team can
move the ball consistently tonight against the Raiders.

Mike Detillier a hit at East St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce luncheonn
Dawn Sharpe-Brackett, chief executive officer, Michele Blanchard, 2013 executive board member, guest speaker Mike Detillier, football talent evaluator/analyst and John Ferrucci Silver Slipper Casino General Manager.
The Lake Sports Director Mike Pervel shares a moment with Mike Detillier and interviews the sports guru.
The East St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce held its August Luncheon yesterday in Slidell at
Trinity's Banquet Hall. The Silver Slipper Casino in conjunction with the Chamber presented
the luncheon with general manager John Ferrucci introducing guest speaker Mike Detillier, one of
the Bayou Boys. Detillier, pretty much a household name to sports fans here in the South, dazzled the large Chamber crowd yesterday with a number of funny, anecdotal stories some throwing barbs at his long-time buddy, former Saints' QB Bobby Hebert, the "Cajun Cannon."
Detillier and Hebert co-host the "Second Guess Show" broadcast live on Monday afternoon's from
the Silver Slipper Casino during the football season.
Detillier also had some great lines referring back to his former sidekick, the late, great
Louisiana icon, "Buddy D" Buddy DeLiberto.
Detillier opened his remarks with a big Who Dat to the delight of the Chamber crowd.
Detillier is well-respected in the broadcast and print journalism community and throughout the league known for his vast sports knowledge and timeless research. He highlighted how he felt about the
Saints' upcoming season. Detillier picked the Black and Gold to win the NFC South holding off
the Atlanta Falcons and when I asked him what he felt the Saints' record would be he said, 10 and 6.
He feels the Saints have to run the ball more consistently to return to their previous playoff form.
He really likes the play and ability of defensive lineman Cam Jordan, describing him as
an unbelievable talent. Detillier said the Saints are focused and ready to play trying to make
fans forget about last year's disappointing 7-9 season following the Bounty Gate scandal. He
said the boss, Sean Payton, is back and folks will be accountable.
Detillier also gave an overview of the LSU Tigers. He predicts the Tigers despite their
tough SEC schedule will surprise a lot of people. He said he wouldn't be surprised if they
win 10 games. He said he feels Cam Cameron the Tigers' new offensive coordinator can make a
difference and added the development of quarterback Zack Mettenberger will be crucial.
At this point, its Geaux Tigers and go Saints!

Saints PA announcer Romig retiring
The New Orleans Saints franchise has announced that one of its familiar voices and faces will
be calling it quits following Friday night's preseason game against the Oakland Raiders in
the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Eighty-three year-old public address announcer Jerry Romig
has decided to hang it up after 44 years of calling Saints' football at Tulane Stadium and
in the Dome. The well-respected and well-liked voice of the Saints has called 445 games in his
illustrious career and hasn't missed calling a Saints home game during that time. The Black and
Gold faithful have thrived on hearing some of his trademark calls, like "First Down, Saints."
The Saints' organization will honor Jerry Romig presenting him with a Super Bowl XLIV ring
during pregame ceremonies at the season opener Sept. 8 in the Dome, hosting the Atlanta
Falcons.
Owner Tom Benson said, "Jerry has been a part of the Saints' family since our third season and we
couldn't be more grateful for his passion and love for the Saints as our PA announcer."
The Romig tradition will continue as his son, Mark, will take over his dad's announcing duties
in the season opener. Mr. Benson went on to say, "We are thrilled his
son, Mark, will carry on the Romig torch as our fans have an incredible affection for Jerry and
is trademark call during games," Mr. Benson said.
Turning to the Saints,
Special teams player Courtney Robey injured his toe in yesterday's practice session. A number of
other Saints' players most notably receiver Marques Colston and corner back Chris Carr were
held out of practice yesterday.
On a positive note, seven-year veteran running back Pierre Thomas returned to the practice
field after missing nearly a week with an undisclosed injury. Thomas had limited activity
during yesterday's practice session as the Saints prepare to host the Oakland Raiders
Friday night in the Dome, coming off their exhibition opening 17-13 victory over Kansas
City.
The Saints' injury picture is starting to clear up a bit. Saints' linebacker Martez Wilson
coming back from a strained left elbow will be wearing a brace throughout the season. Wilson
along with linebacker Junior Galette dressed out for the first time since their injuries and were
in pads, which is a positive look for the Saints' defense in the new 3-4 scheme. Galette didn't
take part in the drills, but hopes to return to the lineup next week.

District 7-1A against the likes of Kentwood and Southern Lab. Now the Hawks have moved up to
Class 2A and will compete in District 8-2A going against Northlake Christian School, Pope John
Paul II, St. Thomas Aquinas and Springfield among others as they hope to prove themselves
moving up in classification.
Head coach Pat Lambert in his fourth season, said they have a strong senior class with 15
experienced seniors and they are talented leaders.
Hannan has a trio of seasoned offensive skill players led by dual-threat QB Korey Zeigler, who
has worked his way back from ACL surgery on his left knee, along with hard-nosed running back
Michael Froeba and sure-handed slot receiver Jason Brooks.
Zeigler said he is back at 100 percent and feels he is quicker as a result of his intense rehab
following surgery. "We have been together now for four years and in some cases five years.
"We have a good chemistry going into the season. We are looking to make a run in the playoffs and
put it all together," Zeigler said.
Zeigler said he has lots of faith in his receivers in Brooks along with junior Daniel Hollander, 6-foot-4, also a Hawks' basketball player, and senior Kyle Sewald, who goes 6-3.
Brooks, the go-to-receiver for the Hawks, said he is anxious about getting the season underway and is looking to have a productive season in the Hawks' passing game.
"We have a lot of experience playing together and want to prove ourselves in Class 2A," Brooks
said.
Senior Zack Castelluccio is moving from linebacker to strong safety this year.
Castelluccio, the heart and soul of the Hawks' defense said, "We are looking for team tackling
and gang tackling. We want to swarm to the football." Castelluccio went on to say most of
the seniors have played together for four years and Korey (Zeigler) and I have been together for
five years, playing as eighth graders," Castelluccio said.
The senior, who loves to put a hat on opponents, said he likes the team's experience level. "We
played in a tough district last year, but we are looking forward to moving up to prove, we belong

The Hawks held their photo/media day Saturday and are hoping to make a seamless transition up to Class 2A.
The Hawks have 15 seniors on the roster and head coach Pat Lambert, heading into his fourth
year, and his staff are excited about the season with some excellent senior leadership.
"We have a great group of senior leaders and they have been through some wars and battles
together."
Lambert said he is excited about the team's offensive skill position players with seniors
quarterback Korey Zeigler, running back Michael Froeba and receiver Jason Brooks, ready to
shoulder the load.
Defensively, the Hawks are moving senior Zack Castelluccio from linebacker to strong safety,
replacing Colin Becnel, who graduated. Lambert described Castelluccio as the player that makes
the Hawks go defensively.
Defensive coordinator Bobby Scelfo, also in his fourth-year, returns and coach Lambert said he
couldn't do it without him and the rest of the Hawks' dedicated staff.
Scelfo said his senior leaders definitely know the defensive system and are teaching the
younger guys. "They are all coaches on the field," said Scelfo.
Coach Scelfo said he has special things planned for Castelluccio and he will be all over the field.
Scelfo said it's simple, he's looking for attitude, fundamentals and execution from his
defense.
Coach Lambert credited Archbishop Hannan principal Father Charles Latour, with doing a
fantastic job supporting the sports programs to help get them where they are.

PJP II media/photo day
The Pope John Paul II Jaguars held their media/photo day Aug. 6 on campus. Jags' head coach Mark Jeanmard, who is entering his sixth season, said he has a 48-player roster, which features 19 seniors. The Jags are looking to improve on last year's 3-7 season, competing in District 8-2A. Two new teams the Archbishop Hannan Hawks and Mt. Hermon have joined the district.
Jeanmard said the good thing about District 8-2A is that everybody is capable of beating each other so it should be a fun season.
Coach Jeanmard called his team a Blue Collar squad that is going to work hard to compete and they'll have a lot of players you probably don't know to get the job done.
"We have a great community and are looking forward to having a great season with our seniors, who have helped the program grow," said Jeanmard.
The Jags return eight offensive starters and nine on defense.
Senior two-way performer lineman Sean O'Brien, 5-10, 240-pounds, is a returning captain, who was voted as a captain last year as a junior. Coach Jeanmard referred to O'Brien as one of the hardest working kids he has ever had a chance to coach and work with.
Jeanmard said senior quarterbacks Joe Feraci and Blaine Haro will see time there and at other offensive positions.
Junior running back Chance Caire, 5-8, 160, is one of the Jags'returning running backs and has been doing a good job.
Jeanmard also highlighted two-way performers seniors Mason Klotz and Michael Nobile, who will be counted on to help lead the Jags' program.
Jeanmard said the players continue to work extremely hard putting in the time preparing for the season. He said his club had a good summer spending some time with the LSU coaching staff and consulting a few other people. Jeanmard said the Jags had pretty good workouts with their conditioning and weightlifting in preparation for the season. The Jaguars take part in the Country Day scrimmage Aug. 24 and open the regular season at home Sept. 6, facing off with an out of town foe, St. Patrick near Biloxi, Mississippi.

Tulane holds indoor scrimmage

practice facility on Airline Drive. Green Wave quarterback Nick Montana, the son of former NFL
great Joe Montana, said, "It was good. We moved the ball pretty well as an offense."
The four Tulane quarterbacks combined going 10-of-13 for 254 yards, scoring on two long
touchdown drives.
Green Wave coach Curtis Johnson said he thought the defensive line played well.

Saints open preseason tonight
The beloved New Orleans Saints finally take the field tonight in the friendly confines of the
Mercedes-Benz Superdome as the Black and Gold host the visiting Kansas City Chiefs. The
contest kicks off at 7 o'clock and as is the case with most preseason tilts it will be
interesting to see just how much playing time the starters will get, after all it is
preseason. The Saints' new 3-4 defensive scheme under coordinator Rob Ryan, which has had some
productive moments during training camp, looks to set the tone in actual game conditions going
against the Chiefs.
Fans attending tonight's game in the Dome should be aware of the NFL's new security rules, which
limits the size of bags, which are allowed to enter the stadium.
In preseason action last night,
the Cincinnati Bengals put together a strong team effort on the road, routing Matt Ryan and
the Atlanta Falcons, 34-10, with Dane Sansenbacher returning a punt 71 yards for a
score and was on the receiving end of a long scoring pass, helping to propel the victory.
Southeastern Louisiana University's Robert Alford, a second round pick, continued to
impress folks. The ESPN broadcast team of Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden raved about Alford's
ability during the game. Alford, the former Lions' player and graduate of Hammond High
School, turned in a solid performance in the Falcons' secondary. Alford, who runs a 4.35 forty, made big contributions defensively for Atlanta. At one point he made two consecutive
tackles and showed quick reflexes batting down a pass at the goal line. Gruden referred to Alford
as a player, who glides to the ball and has tremendous ball skills. It was also said that
Alford played at a small college playing with a chip on his shoulder and he is a physical
tackler. Alford definitely passed his first test on the big stage and hopefully continue to progress
making contributions for the Falcons.
Elsewhere, the defending Super Bowl champs, Baltimore Ravens crushed the Tampa Bay Bucs,
44-16, with Joe Flacco playing two series, hitting on 7-of-9 passes for 57 yards with an interception.
The Denver Broncos trimmed the San Francisco 49ers, 10-6, with Peyton Manning playing just
one series, connecting on 2-of-his 4 passes for 13 yards.
The Washington Redskins playing without QB Robert Griffin III slipped past the Tennessee Titans, 22-21. The Cleveland Browns topped the St. Louis Rams, 27-19 and the Seattle Seahawks cruised past San Diego, 31-10.

Saints lose two players for season
The New Orleans Saints received extremely bad news on both sides of the ball yesterday
reference injuries with speedy wide receiver Joe Morgan and defensive end Kenyon Coleman both out
with season ending injuries.
Morgan, 25, a third-year receiver, is out with an ACL partial tear and a meniscus tear. Morgan
only caught 10 passes last season, but he made the most out of each one as the Saints' pure-
deep threat, averaged 37.9 yards per reception with three scores with a long play of 80 yards.
Coleman, a 34-year-old 12-year vet out of UCLA, suffered a pectoral tear.
Head coach Sean Payton said with those losses they have to find some guys that can step up
and take their spots.
QB Drew Brees described his reaction to Morgan's prognosis in one word, "Stinks." "His role was
there you know? Then all of a sudden, that's taken away," said Brees.
The Saints will practice indoors this afternoon at 4:30 and the practice is closed to the public
as the Black and Gold prepare for tomorrow night's preseason opener in the Mercedes-Benz
Superdome against the Kansas City Chiefs with a seven o'clock kickoff.

LSU reinstates Jeremy Hill
The LSU football Tigers, who were picked as the No. 13 team in the nation in the recent USA
Today College Coaches preseason poll, have reinstated sophomore running back Jeremy Hill
after the team voted his return. Coach Les Miles allowed the team's leading rusher from last
season to return to the club after he was put on indefinite suspension following an off-campus
incident during the spring. Hill returned to the Tigers' practice session yesterday afternoon
after being cleared to practice and take part in team activities. Miles said Hill is still
subject to additional punishment. Hill met with the media following yesterday's practice,
saying, "First of all I want to thank Coach Miles and this university for giving me another
chance to play football. I would like to apologize to my teammates and the community. I
made a poor choice in judgment. But since then I've learned from that mistake."
LSU conducted a pair of split-squad workouts yesterday and will continue to hold split-squad
sessions through Thursday. The first full squad workout is scheduled for Friday. LSU opens the regular season on the road Aug. 31, taking on No. 20 ranked TCU.

St. Paul's Luke Posner excels in lacrosse
St. Paul's senior Luke Posner, a defensive lacrosse player, the son of Ernest and Shelby
Posner of Madisonville, was selected as one of the top ten players in ESPN's Wide World of
Sports Champion All-American Showcase recently. Eighty players representing 27 states
participated in the showcase held at ESPN's Wide World of Sports complex in Florida. The players
were divided into four teams competing in three round robin games with the teams consisting of
only high school All-Americans. Most of the lacrosse players were 2013 graduates with a few
2014 grads making the selective list, like the Wolves' Posner. He competed for Team Liberty,
which advanced to the final game of the series, televised on ESPNU. Posner came up big scoring
his team's first goal in the championship game, but they came up short falling, 11-10 to Team
Pride. Quint Kessenich selected a Top 10 list comprised from each team. Kessenich reviewed
Posner's playing ability this way. "Posner runs like a gazelle and is extremely light on his
feet and played through a calf bruise. The high school football player with adequate size has
been playing for just four years, and if I were a DI program I'd be doing further research,"
said Kessenich.
He also rated St. Paul's to be among the top Louisiana lacrosse teams.
Posner talked about his Florida experience. "Being able to play against all of those DI
players was special to be able to show my skills. Hopefully, I'll be able to go play
somewhere at the college level. I haven't made my decision yet, but I am hoping to go out of
state somewhere to play college lacrosse," said the St. Paul's senior.
Posner has now turned his talents to the Wolves' football team as he plays in the secondary at
strong safety.
The Wolves held their photo/media day yesterday on campus. St. Paul's coach Kenny Sears is
entering his 15th season at the helm. The Wolves won the District 6-5A championship last season
going 6-0 and finished 7-4 overall. St. Paul's has captured four consecutive district crowns
and seven in the last eight years.
The Wolves return 26 seniors and open the season at home in the friendly confines of Hunter
Stadium, hosting Edna Karr, September 6. In week two, the Wolves return to the Mercedes-Benz
Super Dome for the third time, squaring off with the Jesuit Blue Jays this time around, which
should offer fans a good local battle.

Saints defense dominates Black and Gold Scrimmage
New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan's crew got the best of it Saturday in the
Black and Gold scrimmage conducted at the team's training facility in Metairie. It was one of the
largest crowds ever with over 5,000 fans in attendance seeing the defense create three
turnovers with two interceptions and a fumble recovery to go with five sacks.
The Saints' "D" only allowed two scores on 12 drives with fourth-year linebacker Junior
Galette turning in a standout performance with two sacks along with a stop for a loss. Galette,
who has only started two games for the team said, "I feel like today was a big step."
Mark Ingram scored on a one-yard run and third-string QB Ryan Griffin out of Tulane
connected with fullback Austin Johnson on a third-and-goal situation on a fade pass to
account for the offense's two scores in the controlled scrimmage dominated by the defense.
Wide receiver Joe Morgan suffered a left leg injury, while receiver Andy Tanner had a
shoulder issue, while running back Travaris Cadet incurred an unspecified injury.
Today's Saints' practice is closed to the public. The Saints get their preseason underway
Friday, hosting the Kansas City Chiefs.
The NFL Hall of Fame game kicked off the preseason last night in Canton, Ohio with the
Dallas Cowboys hanging on for a 24-20 victory over the Miami Dolphins in an entertaining
contest. The Cowboys played without starter Tony Romo, but came away with a solid running game,
which gained 171 yards. The Hall of Fame's 50th anniversary newest seven members were inducted
over the weekend, including coach Bill Parcells, wide receiver Cris Carter, offensive linemen
Larry Allen and Jonathan Ogden with defensive lineman Warren Sapp along with a pair of senior
selections including defensive tackle Curly Culp and linebacker Dave Robinson.

NCS media/photo day
The Northlake Christian School Wolverines football team held its media/photo day on
Friday. The Wolverines coming off a 5-4 season under head coach Tony Agresta, who is entering
his fifth season, opened their camp Friday on the NCS campus. Agresta said he and the coaching
staff are excited about the upcoming season. "We have a lot senior returners in our skill
spots and that should be beneficial for us." Agresta said the Wolverines are replacing three
out of their five offensive linemen so that will be key. Agresta said he likes the talent level
of his linemen and knows they are up for the challenge. If they can mesh and build on their
potential it should be fun.
Wolverines' senior QB Josh O'Rear, the team's play maker, is back after being named to the
District 8-2A second team offense last year.
O'Rear completed 100-of-181 passes for 1,568 yards with 15 TDs and seven interceptions. The
Wolverines also return senior running back Taylor Mussachia, who rushed for 983 yards and a
team-high 13 touchdowns, averaging 4.9 yards per carry.
Coach Agresta credited coach Mark Robert with doing a great job last season as the team's
defensive coordinator.
NCS opens the season September 6th at home, hosting Clark, a 3A school.

NHS' Mike Bourg recovering
Northshore Panther head football coach Mike Bourg is at home resting following his quadruple
bypass heart surgery last week. We want to wish coach Bourg a speedy recovery and look forward
to him returning to the Panthers' sideline at some point. Let's all keep coach Mike Bourg, his
wife Donna and their three children, Sydney, Blaine and Gracie in our prayers.
Northshore athletic director Tom Gainey, who is coaching the Panthers' freshman team, said Mike
Labourdette, the club's defensive coordinator, has been named the interim head coach until
Bourg is able to return. Gainey said coach Bourg had the table set for the Panthers and everybody
on the coaching staff is stepping up in his absence. Gainey added, the coaches are picking
it up and carrying out the plan.
Coach Bourg's daughter, Sydney, who is entering her senior year at Northshore, plays shortstop
for the Lady Panthers and for the Louisiana Patriots travel team. She was out of town competing in
a USA Nationals tournament in Reno, Nevada when her dad took ill. The Patriots finished third overall in the Silver bracket, going 6-3. Bourg got the job done at the plate hitting .357 with an on base percentage of .470.
The Louisiana Patriots also earned an impressive ninth place finish in the nation, competing in
the ASA Gold Nationals in Clearwater, Florida. It was the highest finish any Louisiana Team has
ever had in the prestigious tournament, according to head coach Darryl Landry.
Assistant coach Randy Carter said Sydney Bourg was and is a big part of the success the team
achieved. After returning to be at her dad's side she made it to Florida to help lead her
team to the ninth place finish, showing her commitment and dedication to her teammates.

2013 LWGA 4-Ball Championship
The 2013 Louisiana Women's Golf Association 4-Ball Championship came to a close yesterday in Lake Charles. Baton Rouge's Julie Harrison and De Ridder's Kie McNabb successfully defended their title in the event shooting a 66 and 67 for a 133 total for a one stroke win over Monroe's Lana Hodge and St. Francisville's Haley Harrington. Eighty-eight competitors participated in the event.
Saints' Will Smith transitioning to linebacker
The New Orleans Saints are doing a little regrouping at the linebacker position with
injuries to Martez Wilson and Victor Butler being out with injuries. Butler tore his ACL
during Organized Training Activities and Wilson dislocated his left elbow Monday in practice.
Wilson is expected to be out two to four weeks. Saints' 10-year vet Will Smith is making the
transition this preseason training camp, moving from his starting end position to a linebacker
spot. Smith has shed about 10 pounds trying to improve his quickness at the position in
defensive coordinator Rob Ryan's new 3-4 scheme. Both Ryan and head coach Sean Payton have
praised Smith's transition during training camp.
Smith said, "It really hasn't been that tough of a transition. Overall, I would look at the
position as just an extension from defensive end."
Saints fans will have an opportunity to check out the team Saturday morning in the Black and
Gold scrimmage, which is set for an 8:50 start time with the gates opening up at 8 o'clock. The
scrimmage is open to the public and there is no admission charge so Saints enthusiasts will have
another chance to see the team before they begin the preseason, hosting the Kansas City Chiefs,

defensive coordinator Rob Ryan's new 3-4 scheme.
The
scrimmage is open to the public and there is no admission charge so Saints enthusiasts will have
another chance to see the team before they begin the preseason, hosting the Kansas City Chiefs,
Friday Aug. 9th in the Mercedes-Benz Super Dome.
