Southeastern Louisiana University takes to the road tomorrow and faces a major challenge going
against the TCU Horned Frogs in Texas. TCU opened its season falling to the LSU Tigers 37-27.
The Lions posted an impressive season opening 45-7 victory over Southeast Missouri at
Strawberry Stadium.
Lions' junior signal caller Bryan Bennett, who poses a dual threat, rushed for three
touchdowns, gaining 106 yards on the ground and passed for 169 yards.
The Lions featured a solid running game picking up 309 yards, averaging 6.2 yards per attempt.
Sophomore Cody Sutton rushed for 87 yards and scored on a 4-yard run.
Lions' senior place kicker Seth Sebastian had a strong opener, connecting on a 45-yard field
goal and clicked on all six of his extra points.
Covington High grad senior punter Matt McCormick punted twice, averaging 42.5 yards per punt and
he is Sebastian's holder on placements.
LSU's Tigers are home tomorrow night in Death Valley putting their 1-0 record on the line
hosting the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
The Blazers dropped their season opener, being edged by Troy 34-31 on the road.
LSU hopes to make an early statement in front of the Tiger crowd as the offense seems to have
found its nich under new offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.
In last week's 37-27 opening victory over a quality TCU club, the Tigers picked up 448 yards
of total offense, averaging 5.6 yards per play, running 80 plays. The Purple and Gold totaled 26
first downs, 14 passing, nine rushing and three by penalty, showing good balance.
LSU rushed for 197 yards and 251 yards through the air as Zach Mettenberger, hit on 16-of-32
attempts.
Tulane's Green Wave got things underway in dramatic fashion in last week's opener,
surprising Jackson State 34-7 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Green Wave defense forced six turnovers in the victory and they host the University of South Alabama, which dropped its opener, in the final seconds, being edged by Southern Utah 22-21. The Jaguars are led by senior left-handed quarterback Ross
Metheny, who holds single season records for passing attempts, completions, passing yards and
touchdowns, all of which came in his first season. Metheny went 12-of-17 for 112 yards with
two scores in last week's one-point loss.
