LSU's Tigers suffered their first defeat in an offensive shootout Saturday being edged by the
Georgia Bulldogs, 44-41, as quarterback Aaron Murray riddled the LSU secondary almost at will
before a packed house in Athens. Ga.
LSU, 4-1, 1-1 in the SEC travels to Starkville this week to battle the Mississippi State
Bulldogs, who had a bye.
Murray delivered a clutch last possession drive, connecting with Justin Scott-Wesley on a 25-yard
scoring toss with 1:47 to play and the Bulldogs' defense did the rest stopping LSU and Zach
Mettenberger on the game's final possession.
Murray hit on four TD passes, completing 20-of-34 for 298 yards with one pick.
THe LSU defense had no answer for Murray as they were unable to put any pressure on the Bulldog's
QB. The Tiger defense gave up 494 yards of total offense, while LSU gained 449 in the contest.
Murray, who battled Mettenberger for the starting job at Georgia previously got the big play when he needed it to a spoil an outstanding performance by Mettenberger.
Mettenberger passed for a career high 372 yards, finding the range on 23-of-37 attempts with
three touchdowns.
LSU receiver Jarvis Landry came through with an exceptional performance with 10 receptions for

LSU hits the road against Georgia
LSU's sixth-ranked Tigers head to Georgia for a Saturday afternoon encounter with the No. 9/10 ranked Georgia Bulldogs in a key SEC battle, which should prove to be the Tigers biggest challenge of the season to this point.
LSU, 4-0, is firing on all cylinders offensively with senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger passing at will against the Tigers competition.
Mettenberger has already surpassed the 1,000 yard passing mark, completing 59-of-91 passes
with 10 touchdowns, the most in school history through four games.
Tomorrow's game pits two of the best SEC quarterbacks in Mettenberger going against Georgia's Aaron Murray.
LSU and Georgia, both charter members of the SEC, have met 29 times with the Tigers leading
the series 16-12-1. Three of those previous meetings have come in the SEC Championship game
in Atlanta with LSU winning two of those contests.
LSU has won 29 straight games in September, dating back to 2006. The Tigers last September
loss was at the hands of Auburn 7-3.
LSU is off to a 4-0 start for the seventh consecutive season and the Tigers have yet to
trail this season in 240 minutes of actual playing time. LSU has outscored its opponents
173-88 so the defense is also getting the job done. Tiger linebacker Lamin Barrow tops the
club with 22 tackles followed by defensive tackle Ego Ferguson and safety Micah Eugene just
one tackle behind.

Shaquille O'Neal minority owner of NBA's Sacramento Kings
Former LSU and NBA basketball star Shaquille O'Neal, who is never at a loss for words and
always loves to poke fun at others, is a minority owner of the Sacramento Kings, a team
that he pounded on during his playing days. He declared the new name of the city "Shaqramento."
O'Neal said he wants to make amends to Kings' fans for his past verbal swipes. While winning
three NBA crowns with the Los Angeles Lakers, he called the franchise the "Sacramento Queens."
Shaq said, "I apologize. If you see me around town, come give me a hug, give me a kiss. I'll
do whatever you want," said O'Neal.
The 15-time All-Star, who closed out a 19-year career in 2011, said he has no intention of
being a silent investor. O'Neal said he wants to help mentor center DeMarcus Cousins, while giving his input on basketball decisions and help the team build the NBA's first "indoor-outdoor arena."

Saints hosting Arizona
Saints' head coach Sean Payton made a key decision Sunday in his club's 16-14
come-from-behind road victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when he did what most critics say you
should almost never do and that is take points off the board. Place kicker Garrett Hartley had
booted a 20-yard field goal, but the Bucs were off sides. Following a timeout it appeared
quarterback Drew Brees talked Payton into going for it on fourth down instead, taking the points
off the board, which almost came back to haunt the Saints as Mark Ingram, the former Heisman
Trophy Winner, was stuffed by the Bucs' defense, which only had 10 players on the field.
The Black & Gold managed to overcome that decision and take care of business as Brees
directed Sunday's dramatic five-play drive with 1:06 left and no timeouts, racing the Saints
down field, resulting in Hartley's 27-yard game-winner, putting the team in the driver's
seat at 2-0 in the NFC South race.
Tight end Jimmy Graham, who had a career day with 10 catches for 179-yards including a
56-yard TD from Brees, talked about his veteran QB.
"That guy, Drew Brees, he's magical, he really is." It doesn't matter what time of the game it
is, at what point in the game it is, he has belief in us, and he knows that. If you give him
a minute, if you give him 30 seconds, we all have hope on this team," Graham added.
Tampa Bay held a 14-13 lead when Ryan Lindell missed on a 47-yard field goal attempt, giving
the Saints new life.
Saints' middle linebacker Curtis Lofton said he likes what the team's defense has done to this
point in the season.
"It's a new team, new defense and new defensive coordinator. Last year was last year," said
Lofton.

come-from-behind road victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when he did what most critics say you
should almost never do and that is take points off the board.

LSU prepping for Auburn
The LSU Fighting Tigers face a stiff challenge Saturday hosting Auburn in the SEC opener for
both clubs, which are unblemished at 3-0, setting up a classic battle in the Western
Division.
Saturday's game, which is a sellout, will be broadcast on ESPN.
LSU has outscored their first three opponents 138-57. The Tigers, which have won four straight and 26 of their last 27 home games, brings the nation's longest current September winning streak into the Auburn contest at 28 straight. LSU's last
September loss came at Auburn in 2006.
LSU won last year's contest 12-10 at Auburn and leads the series 26-20-1.
LSU's offense, directed by the consistency of Zach Mettenberger, is firing on all cylinders.
Mettenberger seems to be making all of the required throws and he is making solid decisions
to this point, guiding the Tigers' offense in almost flawless fashion.
Mettenberger is on a record-breaking pace three weeks into the season. His nine passing
touchdowns in three games are the most by a quarterback in the first three games in LSU
history. Former Tiger QB Matt Mauck tossed eight touchdowns in the first three games during
the 2003 national championship season.
Now the real tests are at hand as LSU steps up in class going against the likes of the Auburn
Tigers, who slipped past the Mississippi State Bulldogs 24-20 to remain unbeaten.

St. Paul's Hebert boots game-winner in the Dome
St. Paul's Wolves took to the big stage Friday night in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome edging the
Jesuit Blue Jays 24-21 in a thriller on Grant Hebert's 33-yard field goal on the final play in the first game
of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Prep Football Showcase broadcast on The Lake.
In the second game, John Curtis' 29-game winning streak came to a close as the Patriots fell to
St. Thomas Aquinas out of Fort Lauderdale, Fl., 27-13.
Hebert initially missed on a 38-yard attempt with the ball drifting wide left as time expired
tied 21-21, but Jesuit was whistled for a running into the kicker penalty, resulting in a re-kick.
Given the second opportunity, Hebert drove the ball through the uprights, sending the Wolves home victorious, presenting St. Paul's head coach Kenny Sears with his 100th career victory.
St. Paul's middle linebacker Jase Stubbs, who made nine tackles, eight solos, picked off a pass late in the fourth quarter, setting up the Wolves' final drive.
Wolves' junior quarterback Ryan O'Krepki played a solid game, clicking on 23-31 passes for 283
yards with two TDs and an interception. His Jesuit counterpart junior Trey LaForge was also

St. Paul's took a 14-0 first quarter lead, before Jesuit regrouped and battled back. LaForge hit Nathan Zimmer on a 25-yard TD. He also found Chris Mills on a 48-yarder. Mills finished with five catches for 91 yards. LaForge hooked up with Daron Wilford for 14 yards with 5:23 left and back up QB Thomas Marks connected with Foster Moreau on a successful two-point conversion to tie the game at 21-21 as it appeared the teams might be headed to overtime before the Wolves secured the 3-point victory on Hebert's game-winning boot.. .

Saints earn miraculous win over Bucs
The Saints battled back yesterday with Drew Brees orchestrating a miraculous last minute
five-play drive culminating with Garrett Hartley's 27-yard game-winning field goal
vaulting the Black & Gold past the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a gut-wrenching 16-14 victory.
The teams kicked off yesterday at 3:05, but the game was halted shortly there after for one hour
and nine minutes due to lightening strikes in the area.
Tampa Bay probably felt like they were hit by lightening as they missed a 47-yard field
goal holding a 14-13 advantage with just 1:06 to play, setting up Brees and Hartley for their
last minute heroics to push the Saints to 2-0 at the top of the NFC South standings.
For the second consecutive week, the defense got the job done, giving up just 273 yards to the
Bucs. The Saints' 'D' has only allowed 31 points in two games after giving up an average of 28
points per game last year, becoming the worst statistical defense in the history of the NFL.
It would appear after the first two wins this year's defense under Rob Ryan has the talent and
character to turn things around.
It's only two weeks into the season, but the Saints' defense is pulling its weight to this point, and has actually kept the Saints in both games, having a shot to win. When the offense gets in high-gear things should be interesting.
Brees, 26-of-46, passed for 322 yards with a score, but was intercepted twice and one was
returned for a TD with all 14 points coming off those turnovers.
Brees was on target when it counted on the last minute game-winning drive including a clutch 31-yard hook up to Marques Colston, who drew single coverage and made a nice over-the-shoulder reception on a perfectly thrown ball by Brees, setting up Hartley's game-winner. Brees hustled the Saints to the line of scrimmage and spiked the ball with five seconds left.
Jimmy Graham had a career day, finishing with 10 receptions for 179 yards, doing most of his
damage in the first half. He caught a 54-yard scoring strike from Brees.

downed Detroit 25-21.

Saints travel to Tampa Bay
The Saints take on NFC South rival Tampa Bay on the road Sunday with a 3:05 kickoff. The Saints
are a 3 1/2 point favorite and hopefully are catching a Buc team at a good time even though
it is early in the season.
Tampa Bay, 0-1, after dropping their opener, 18-17 on a last second field goal following a
roughness call on Lavante David for an out of bounds hit on Jets' rookie QB Geno Smith,
which put New York in field goal position.
Tampa Bay played undisciplined football in the opener committing 13 penalties for 102 yards. The Bucs seem to be facing some early season distractions and quarterback Josh Freeman was
not elected as a team captain and he missed a recent early morning team photo, saying he overslept.
Drew Brees and his deep receiving corps look to continue their impressive work. Brees
appeared to be in mid-season form completing 26-of-35 passes for 357 yards with touchdowns to
Marques Colston, 25 yards and seven yards to Jimmy Graham.
On this date in 2009,
the Saints opened their Super Bowl-winning season with a 45-27 victory over the visiting Detroit Lions. Brees equaled a club record by passing for six touchdowns.
In a roster move, the Saints resigned veteran Jay Richardson yesterday to add depth along the
defensive line with the injury to starting nose tackle Brodrick Bunkley, who is out with a calf injury.
To make room for Richardson, the Saints waived fan favorite wide receiver Andy Tanner, who had
finally made the final 53-man roster cut.
Richardson, a five-year vet, could play defensive end or outside linebacker, which gives
the Saints some added depth and flexibility. Richardson was cut at the end of the preseason.
Coach Sean Payton said he sees Richardson more as an outside linebacker. Payton said, "He's very smart, he's someone that's a quick study and knows a lot of different positions."

OSU accused of NCAA rules violations
Oklahoma State University is in the news, which is where LSU head coach Les Miles coached the
Cowboys from 2001 to 2004 before taking over the Tigers' program.
A Sports Illustrated five-part series released yesterday alleges that some NCAA rules
violations may have taken place at Oklahoma State suggesting players were paid by coaches
and boosters, while Miles was the team's head coach.
Miles has denied there were any violations committed at OSU under him.
Former LSU Athletic Director Skip Bertman said yesterday morning nothing came up during the
background check when Miles was hired by LSU back in 2004.
Bertman told NOLA.com/The Times Picayune he found no evidence of wrongdoing by Miles prior
to hiring him.
Bertman said, "we did an extensive background check on a personal basis, and there was also a
background check on the University per se."
"Nothing showed in terms of NCAA issues-nothing," said Bertman.
Bertman went on to say, "I'm not saying this guy is wrong. But I am saying there was nothing that
involved Les Miles."
The reported violations are beyond the statute of limitations, which makes it unlikely the
NCAA can bring any penalties to Miles or the accused coaches of his staff.
LSU is focused on its third game of the season, Saturday as the Tigers host Kent State in Death
Valley. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU with a 6 o'clock kickoff.
Kent State is 1-1 on the season. The Golden Flashes beat Liberty University 17-10 in their
opener before falling to Bowling Green 41-22 last week.

Saints travel to Tampa Bay
The Saints are looking to keep the momentum going from their gutsy 23-17 season opening
victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
The Saints, who have a one game lead over their rivals in the NFC South, travel to Tampa Bay to
battle the Bucs. The last time the two clubs met it was all Saints as they took a 41-0 blowout
victory with Drew Brees passing for four touchdowns and 307 yards.
Tampa Bay showed a lack of discipline in last week's 18-17 loss to the New York Jets. The Bucs
committed a bone-head play when Lavonte David hit Jets' rookie quarterback Geno Smith out of
bounds and was assessed a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty, which put the Jets in a last
second field goal situation, booting a 48-yarder to win it. The Bucs were penalized 13 times for
102 yards against the Jets.
Former Southeastern Louisiana University Lions' secondary player Robert Alford, a second-round
pick of the Atlanta Falcons, made his NFL debut Sunday starting against the Saints in the Dome.
Alford made his presence felt intercepting a Drew Brees' pass when he wrestled the ball away
from sure-handed Marques Colston. He also broke up two passes and assisted on a tackle. A nice
start for the former SLU Lions' player, who starred at Hammond High as a former Tornado.

Saints host Falcons in opener
The New Orleans Saints are finalizing their preparations to host their NFC South rival,
Atlanta Falcons in Sunday's season opener in the Superdome.
The Black and Gold are anxious to put last season's critics to rest after posting a
disappointing 7-9 season being forced to go without head coach Sean Payton.
NFL analyst Mike Detillier says he feels having the boss back as he refers to Payton is worth
three wins. Detillier is picking the Saints to finish 10-6 and win the NFC South.
Meanwhile the Vegas odds makers are picking the Saints to have a nine-win season.
Payton has a sparkling 10-2 record in head-to-head competition with the Falcons in his career
and is 5-1 in the Superdome.
Detillier, a well-respected analyst and talent evaluator, predicts Sunday's Saints-Falcons'
home match up will be an explosive affair, picking the Saints to win it 33-30. Detillier
added, he wouldn't be surprised if it went into overtime.

Denver's Peyton Manning lights it up
Denver's Peyton Manning opened the NFL season last night in exploding record-setting fashion
connecting on seven touchdown passes leading the Broncos to a 49-27 victory over the defending
Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens in the high altitude of Denver.
The game's start was delayed 34-minutes due to lightening strikes before Manning, who finished
the night, clicking on 27-of-42 for 462 yards, was on fire gutting the Baltimore Ravens porous
secondary.
Manning, who appeared to be in playoff form, finding his receivers, becomes just the sixth
player in NFL history to toss seven touchdowns in a game.
Manning joins the likes of Joe Kapp, 1969, Y. A. Title, 1962, George Blanda, 1961, Adrian Burk,
1954 and Sid Luckman, 1943.
Only Manning and Title accomplished the seven TD passes without throwing an interception.
Free agent receiver Wes Welker hauled in nine receptions from Manning going for 67 yards and
two TDs. Demarius Thomas pulled in five catches for 161 yards with two scores. Little known
tight end Julius Thomas added five catches for 110 yards with two touchdowns.
Manning appeared to be able to hook up at will as the Broncos' receivers managed to get free
throughout the night and the QB was able to find them.
Baltimore's Joe Flacco aired it out as well, completing 34-of-62 passes, finishing with two
TD strikes.
The Ravens suffered a couple of key injuries with wide receiver/returner Jacoby Jones
spraining a knee and offensive tackle Michael Oher sustained an ankle injury and neither
player returned.

West Monroe's cameron Robinson selects Alabama
The LSU Tiger football team and coach Les Miles lost out yesterday while trying to sign a big
time recruit with SEC rival Alabama winning out. West Monroe offensive lineman Cameron Robinson
has selected the Alabama Crimson Tide over the LSU Tigers.
Robinson, a 6-foot-6, 320-pounder, the No. 2 prospect in the NOLA.Com/Times Picayune Nifty 50
and a consensus five-star recruit considered the top offensive tackle in the nation, said he had
to separate himself as a fan of LSU and evaluate the school as a prospect. He said after doing
so, Alabama won out.
