Covington High Fighting Lions continue playoff hunt for possible Class 5A state crown



The No. 14 seed Covington High Fighting Lions continued to excel in the playoffs under first-year head coach Greg Salter using a solid defensive effort to take down No. 11 seed Catholic of  Baton Rouge 20-14 in the Class 5A quarterfinals on the road. Covington, 9-4, advances to the Class 5A semifinal game, hosting No. 2 seed Parkway, Friday night at Jack Salter Stadium. Parkway outlasted No. 10 seed Zachary 49-34 Friday night to advance. The Lions' defense came up big picking off three passes. George Brister and Andrew Breeland delivered picks and Brian Armstrong made the defensive play of the game with his pick halting a late Catholic drive to secure the victory. Armstrong, Breeland and Brister also registered six tackles each. Colt Clemons led the Lions' defense with 12 tackles including eight primary stops with one tackle for loss and he broke up a pass. Mason Bourgeois, Hewson Knight and Garrald McDowell each delivered nine tackles helping to spearhead the defensive effort with McDowell recording a sack, his ninth of the season. Broderick Bankston logged six tackles including his team leading 11th sack. Joshua Bickham rushed for 118 yards and two TDs for the Lions, while McDowell added a one-yard score with Ian Connelly tacking on two extra points.
