Mandeville Skipper Classic Basketball tourney underway with eight teams competing

The 2013 Mandeville Skipper Classic basketball tournament got underway yesterday featuring eight teams. In yesterday's opener, the undefeated Salmen Spartans, 6-0, kept up their winning ways, downing the Slidell Tigers 53-41. In the second contest, New Iberia rolled past the undermanned Bogalusa Lumberjacks 76-16. The Catholic University Bears downed the Fontainebleau Bulldogs 54-40. FHS' Justin Muscaro finished with nine points, connecting on three treys, while teammate Logan Thompson also added nine points followed by Colin Buttone with seven. The host Skippers hung tough last night, but the athleticism and quickness of John Ehret proved to be the difference as the Patriots earned a 50-43 victory. Mandeville battled late in the fourth quarter cutting the John Ehret lead to 41-40 with 1:10 remaining before faltering. Mandeville's Hunter Dugas dropped in a game-high 21 points with teammate Alex Tryforos adding nine. John Ehret's duo of Deondrea Kent and Anthony McGehee combined for 33 points. Kent tallied 19 points and McGehee finished with 14. Day two of the Skipper Classic gets underway this afternoon at 3:30 with the tournament continuing through tomorrow.
