Salmen wins Skipper Classic; Spartans move to 8-0



The 2013 Mandeville Skipper Classic, a 3-day event, concluded Friday night with the unbeaten Salmen Spartans winning the championship trimming New Iberia 46-37. The Spartans, who moved to 8-0, made their way to the title with three players in double figures led by Chris Vickers with 15 points followed by Corey Vincent's 11 and Cody Rudolph, who chipped in with 10. The Spartans turned in clutch free throw shooting down the stretch, clicking on 14-of-15 attempts and coupled that with solid defense, a trademark of Jay Carlin coached teams. Salmen's Corey Vinson was named the Skipper Classic MVP and teammate Chris Vickers was named to the All-Tournament team. In the Skipper Classic final game, the host Skipers, downed the Slidell Tigers 52-29 led by Hunter Dugas with 18 points including three 3-pointers. Dugas represnted the 5-3 Skippers on the All-Tournament team. Mitchell Tranchina chipped in with  8 points. Slidell had two players in double figures with J. R. Abee and Blake Reynard scoring 10 points each. Mandeville first-year coach Paul Paille said things went smoothly in the tournament. Paille said they catered to the student body to make it a fan friendly event and they turned out in big numbers watching some excellent high school basketball.
