LHSAA state football playoffs conclude in Superdome

The LHSAA/State Farm Prep Classic championship games concluded Saturday in the
Mercedes-Benz Superdome bringing the high school football season to a close as nine state
champions were crowned. Congratulations to East Jefferson, who won its first-ever football state
title, with the Warriors holding off Edna Karr, 38-28 to capture the Class 4A crown. Also
locally, the John Curtis Patriots won their 26th state championship Thursday, blanking University
Lab 32-0 for the newly created Division II title. Congrats to the Archbishop Rummel Raiders, who won their second consecutive state title, under coach Jay Roth, winning the Division I title, edging Byrd 23-22 in a classic battle on Thursday. The Archbishop Hannan Hawks made their run to the Superdome, but couldn't get it done, falling to a power house No. 2 seed Cavalry Baptist Cavliers, 62-7 in the Division III championship contest. The Hannan Hawks finished their school record season at 11-3 under fourth-year head coach Pat Lambert. The hawks surprised a lot of folks as they made their way to the Dome after moving up in classification this season. Also kudos to the No. 14 seed Covington High Fighting Lions, who made a strong playoff run, advancing to the Class 5A semifinals, being trimmed by No. 2 seed Parkway 28-27. The Lions finished 9-5 under first-year head coach Greg Salter. In Saturday night's final playoff game at the Dome, the No. 1 seed Acadiana Wreckin' Rams outlasted Parkway 77-41 in an offensive shootout to earn the Class 5A state championship.
