SLU wins eighth straight earning at least share of Southland Conference title


Southeastern Louisiana University exploded for 24 unanswered points Saturday at home en route to their eighth consecutive victory turning back No. 4 ranked Sam Houston State 34-21 at Strawberry Stadium. The 8-3 Bearkats are the two-time defending conference champs and are now 4-2 in Conference play. The Lions close out the regular season this Thursday hosting Nicholls State at Strawberry Stadium and can win the outright Southland Conference crown with a victory.
The Lions, 9-2, clinched at least a share for the Southland Conference title along with its first-ever berth in the Football championship Subdivision playoffs. The Southland Conference title is the Lions' first since 1961 when Southeastern won the Gulf States Conference. The 24-team FCS playoff field will be announced this Sunday at 10:30 on ESPNU.
Bryan Bennett passed for 268 yards, hooking up with Marquis Fruge on a couple of scoring passes
and also found Xavier Roberson on a 62-yarder.
Bennett also topped the Lions with 51 yards rushing as Southeastern racked up 413 yards of total offense, marking the fourth straight game with 400-plus yards.
Lions' senior place kicker Seth Sebastian booted two more field goals and remained a perfect 11-of-11 on the season.
