The LHSAA state football playoffs got underway last night and in Class 4A the No. 2 Karr Cougars rolled past the No. 31 Salmen Spartans 53-7. The Spartans finish the season 3-8.
Tonight's Lake 94.7 broadcast game of the week features No. 14 seed Covington High, hosting the
No. 19 seed Airline Vikings from Bossier City. Pregame gets underway at 6:45 followed by the game action so join myself and Matt Penix for tonight's playoff action. The Fighting Lions enter the game with a 6-4 mark, while the Vikings sport a 5-5 record. The Lions are looking to gain their first playoff victory since 2001.
In other playoff action involving District 6-5A teams, the No. 12 seeded Mandeville Skippers, a two-time state semi finalist, host No. 21 John Ehret at Sidney Theriot Stadium. The 8-2 Skippers are led offensively by senior quarterback Glen Cuiellette, who has thrown for 2,038 yards with 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Cuiellete has a talented crew of receivers topped by Parker Orgeron, who enters with 30 receptions and a team-high eight receiving touchdowns followed by Zac Barrient with 28 catches and five scores. James Treuting handles the running game with 531 yards and five touchdowns. Defensively, the Skippers are led by leading tackler linebacker Matthew Scanlon and fellow backer Mason Lemieux, who have 80 and 72 tackles respectively.
Ponchatoula, the No. 16 seed hosts No. 17 Haughton at The Swamp led by QB Christian Campbell.
The No. 32 Slidell Tigers are on the road, facing a major challenge, squaring off with No. 1 seed Acadiana.
In the Class 4A playoffs, Lakeshore, 5-5, the No. 21 seed is on the road tonight, battling No. 12 Belle Chasse. The Titans are led by QB Dylan Fields and David Ducre along with receivers Xavier Chatman, Nathan Faciane and Rex Shepherd.
In the Division I select bracket, the No. 7 St. Paul's Wolves, the co-district champion with
Mandeville, hosts No. 10 Archbishop Shaw at Hunter Stadium. Wolves' running back Marcus
Gaines is the player to stop and quarterback Ryan O'Krepki has put up solid numbers for the Wolves.
In Division III opening round playoff action, the undefeated 10-0 Northlake Christian School
Wolverines, enter as a No. 3 seed and host No. 14 Redemptorist. The Wolverines offense is led
by running back Taylor Mussachia, who has gained 1,123 yards with 20 touchdowns. Quarterback Josh O'Rear provides the Wolverines with a dual threat, passing for 1,187 yards with 12 TD's and he has rushed for 482 yards with 10 scores.
No. 4 seed Archbishop Hannan, 8-2, is at home tonight, going against No. 13 seed Westminster
Christian. The Hawks have a balanced offense running and passing the ball. QB Korey Zeigler
is competing 66 percent of his passes with 1,248 yards and 14 touchdowns. Zeigler, who sat out
last week, is also the second leading rusher on the team with 695 yards with 10 rushing TD's.
Michael Froeba leads the Hawks with 784 yards and has also netted 10 rushing scores.
On the other side of the Parish, the No. 12 seed Pope John Paul II Jaguars, travel to No. 5 Holy
Savior Menard. The Jags, 5-5, count on running back Joe Feraci and quarterback Blaine Haro with
senior lineman and team captain Sean O'Brien opening the holes.
